Not quite my style of game, but I’ve heard nothing but good things about it, and it does look pretty fun overall. It’s also one of the examples of a studio doing things right at the moment, which is becoming more and more rare.

I do love a good shooter, but generally I only play single player, co-op (LAN) or things like Quake series (also on LAN) with friends/family. Can’t really get myself to play online with people I don’t know. Usually too much noise.

@J3RK worth it for the sound design/graphics alone. i was worried it wasn’t fun solo but its kind of nuts how 99% of the playerbase comes running out screaming ā€œFRIENDLYā€ ā€œI WONT SHOOTā€ etc hahaha. in squad games people are a lot more agro

This seems to be kind of a general video game thread in some ways, so…

Anybody snagging anything during the ps5 sale? I grabbed Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Silent Hill F, and then I’m debating between Assassin’s Creed: Shadows, Chained Echoes, and Final Fantasy XVI.

Ayup! It kind of brings together the worlds of CoD and DayZ, and that is just an unfathomable achievement. A looter/extraction shooter with a social component i love it.

I don’t have a PS (but do use DualSense pads on my PC).

I do have my eye on Clair though.

Currently getting my looting from Witchfire

Used to be Borderlands, but Randy pushed all the wrong buttons for me…. …again…. Didn’t pick up 4.

I just finished a bunch of new and old games. Waiting for new ones like DEFECT to come out as it looks like tons of fun in both online multiplayer coop and single player mode plus Mick Gordon of Doom fame is doing the soundtrack!

I’ve bought Minecraft like 5 times now because of Microsoft’s bullshit. When I bought it you were supposed to be able to install it on multiple home computers for multiplayer. It was a nightmare to pull off but it eventually worked.

Constant updates that don’t install. Bedrock vs java. Then the mods store that is just garbage to ensure my kids into wasting money. It’s so sad what they’ve done to such a great franchise.

They killed Halo from what I’ve heard as well. I want to get a steam OS machine but we play a lot of retro stuff like UT99, StarCraft, etc so we need Windows

They have pretty much killed everything they’ve touched. Luckily id Software SO FAR still seems to be doing their thing though. I enjoyed the last Doom quite a bit.

Pretty sure UT99 has a Linux version. No idea whether it works on modern Linux though.

A quick search seems to indicate that you can play old games such as those on Linux via the Steam Proton compatibility stuff. I haven’t tried it myself yet but it’s something worth keeping in mind -

Proton is absolutely amazing! I still hit the odd game that doesn’t like it, but most things run extremely well. Sometimes better than under Windows. Also, some things that say they aren’t compatible still run perfectly (like maybe they just hadn’t gotten to test/cert it or something. I’m sure there are plenty that still need work, maybe some that don’t work at all. I have something like 500 games in Steam, and while I only play a certain percentage of them, and even fewer regularly, I think I’ve only hit 4-5 with issues so far. I’m sure I’ll run into more eventually, but they’re also improving it constantly. I don’t believe I’ve seen anything like this since emulation started getting popular in the 90s. (As far as being impressed by what could be run on a different platform.)

I also think that since they used ARM in the headset that compatibility and translation across X86/X64 and ARM is going to get better faster. Might be good for Apple machines in the long run. Good things are happening on that side too, but much more slowly. If Valve are pushing for it, might speed things up.

I play Unreal Tournament 99 and 3 on my Steam Deck all the time and they work great- people are still playing regularly on UT99 servers. Unreal Tournament 2004 has microstutters that occur ever 5 seconds or so and make it basically unplayable for me. I do check back in every six months or so and try the newest Proton version to see if they somehow accidentally fixed the issue by changing something else but that hasn’t happened yet- actually Proton version 8.something has the ā€œbestā€ performance and we’re up to like 10 already so it’s unlikely to be fixed but I still keep checking.

You can get Unreal Tournament 99 on OldUnreal.com cause it was abandoned by Epic. They officially support using OldUnreal.com and that’s how you’ll get a version that plays perfectly on modern systems and has current server support. UT can put you into a zen like flowstate and has some pretty neat electro/jungley tunes to boot! I just play with bots cause I like to have fun.

Playing Expedition 33 now in my little bits of spare time. Luckily over the long weekend I had some good enough chunks of time where I could make some significant progress. Love this game!

Also, my kids decided it was time for another play through Alien: Isolation. We’ve been setting aside an hour or two every night to all sit in the living room and play through it. Absolute blast. The game still looks absolutely incredible. Better than some current games.

I also got my Analogue 3D, and loaded it up with a ton of my favorite N64 games. This is the absolute best way that I’ve ever played anything N64. It’s an incredible piece of hardware. Highly recommend it!

Now if I just had more time to play… It’s nice to see the kids playing some older games though. Between the freshly re-capped SNES, the Analogue 3D, and my SuperGrafx and C64 Ultimate, there has been some serious classic gaming going on in the house lately. With or without me.

You loaded the Analog 3d? Does it support roms? Thought it was only for cartridges. Does it even have a sd slot?

Using an Everdrive 64 X7 with it. I have a bunch of cartridges, but prefer to have a nice interface to load everything. If you order an X7 now, it comes with the updated firmware on it, so works out of the box. However, if you already had one (like I did) you have to use a 1K resistor (pushed into a specific location) load the firmware, then remove the resistor. It was super easy though. The 3D DOES have an SD slot, but no idea if it will ever be utilized for loading ROMs. Right now it’s just for loading firmware updates.

The 3D is pretty amazing. Running it in its overclocked modes makes some games that were never quite fast/smooth enough originally look amazing. Racing games like Extreme G (for example) are really nice like this. The display output is really nice too. Best that I’ve seen for N64 games.

The MiSTer’s N64 core is really nice too, but I’d give the edge to the 3D.
