Best I’ve ever gotten were things like “not bad” “that was good”
Which, I mean, I’m cool with I’ve slowly aged into taking compliments at face value. I have no reason not to. And I think it’s good, otherwise I wouldn’t be showing it to others
as I rarely do
I love this, absolute top goal - my three year old heard some of my music earlier this year, I told him who it was and he did this huge gasp and said “really?! Wowwww”. It was amazing haha!
The kids really like when I plug the Model:Samples for them to hit the pads.
It looks like a fisher price, so that also helps.
A very expensive fisher price toy, yet it stands everything.
When I’ve gotten compliments after playing live, it’s always been about the music. Never got compliments for using particular gear.
Last time I played live I did get the comment “wow you brought out all that shit”. I took that as an exclamation rather than a compliment. Person was referring to how I brought a multi-effects unit, groovebox, amp, and electric violin, while everybody else brought only an acoustic guitar and/or a phone loaded with backing tracks.
All the compliments and insults from gigs and recordings are mostly blur at this point (as expected from someone with PTSD from their musical “career”), but the one compliment that has always stood out for me was when a friend, who was an extremely tough critic and into far more obscure dissonant music than what I was doing, once told me that my songs get stuck in his head all the time. Granted, he didn’t specify if they were of the annoying ear worm type (I’m terrible at taking compliments myself hence the deflection), but that’s just so fascinating to me. The thought of my songs parking themselves in someone’s subconscious blows my mind.
Life goals
Nobody that ever hears my music care about sound design so it’s more of an emotional response (that’s beautiful etc.)
My wife fell asleep to a pattern I was working on, mission accomplished?
It’s hard to share your music with someone if they’re not as passionate about it as we are.
Personally, I hardly ever play my music anymore.
Except for my wife and kids.
When I play my music for my wife, she says:
“Oh, nice. That’s good, honey.”
Then when I put on a song by one of my favorite artists in the same musical genre as mine, she says:
“IS THAT YOUUUU ??? I LOVE IT.”
I don’t know if I’m offended or flattered.
if the primary reason you make music is because of the happiness it gives you then it’s not easy to get excited about what someone else thinks about your music, but if you really want compliments about your music it isn’t as hard as you might think to get them… Often when I see these discussions come up what I find is that the majority of the people not getting the response they are after aren’t really putting the focus on getting their music in front of the ears that actually want to hear their music… for example I’m an Mc that makes hiphop music, but there are people who love and listen to hiphop all day and all night long every day who couldn’t care less about how good of an MC I am, or any other MC for that matter much less a rapper… you could write the best rap in the world and all it would do is make them sick…
if you really want people to respond well to your music you have to make sure you’re playing it for the right people because you’ve got to keep in mind and I’m sure you’ve had the experience of listening to music that you don’t like… it’s not pleasant at all and that doesn’t mean the music was bad, it means that it wasn’t for you.
you’ve got to find your musical tribe and share your music with them and you’ll be pleased with a much more encouraging response if that is what you’re looking for.
back to hiphop again, now there are people who listen to hiphop and don’t even pay attention to the beat and only care about the lyrical prowess of the person rapping, there are other people who judge a song based only on the hi-hat arrangement and so many other examples like those who focus on basslines etc… or drums… on and on … the point is walking into a room or a forum, or a family get together expecting your musical tribe to be there representing for you doesn’t make much sense… you’ve got to do the work to find the appropriate ears for the message you are sending or else there is no reason to expect a good response.
this is why Noise artist do very well and have cult followings, they only market to people who want to hear noise, this is why some youtube music personality that you have no respect for is doing wonderfully well because they’ve tuned into their audience/tribe… there is really no such thing as bad or good music only connection or lack of connection… you have to match the right music with the right ears.
So true. Obsessing over details and active listening in general can be really tiresome, sometimes we forget to just feel the music.
just sayin, you gotta know who your music is for before presenting it to people… some folks only care about an 808, or an amen break, and if your song has neither you wasted your time on trying to get them to enjoy it…
I’m always trying to compliment my music.
Nice track you made yesterday. Those hats were slaying.
Thanks dude.
Don’t forget to pick up some beer and tacos.
Thanks. I searched 3 days for those hats.
Third hat blind.

that’s one bad muthaf… what, I’m just talking about hats
Uau great point!
It’s weird, I actually don’t record much. I only record sessions I play with my m8 Nando. We go on trips for a weekend with some gear and just play our hearts out. It’s nice to record the sesh so we can hear it later and it brings back memories.
But other than that, I really don’t have the drive to record or share anything. It’s a very personal voyage for me.
A connoisseur post.
