I recently discovered the amazing Lovecraft’s novels adapted by Gou Tanabe. I always loved comics, but never approached mangas before: Tanabe work on Lovecraft is astonishing! He is so insanely detailed in the graphic rendering of Lovecraft’s world that gives you exactly the same feeling you have reading the novels. Very good work. Drawings are beautiful and sometimes are truly scary. Highly recommended
In the last ten years he adapted:
Dagon
The Cats of Ulthar
The nameless city
The Hound
The Call of Chtulhu
The colour out of space
The Dunwich horror
The shadow over Innsmouth
At the mountains of madness
The shadow out of time
The hounter of the dark
High quality stuff!!!
Nice topic.
Comic fan since the 70s.
Grew up with the usual suspects.
Moebius is and always has been my favorite.
I got to experience what it’s like to wait two years or more for „the incal“ sequels.
Just arrived… wizdom and beauty.
Perhaps interesting for Moebius fans.
I just stumbled upon some photos I took during the Moebius exhibition at the Max Ernst Museum Cologne Brühl in 2019. Mostly details. Was a great exhibition.
Only 5 Pics per posting, arghel.
It’s not comics, but on the topic of Moebius, has anybody else watched Scavengers Reign? It’s on Netflix, the whole thing feels like a love letter to him.
I just read through this whole thread and have a huge list of new stuff to read, thanks all! Since nobody else mentioned it, I also wanted to add The Wicked and the Divine, a gorgeous, messy, too long sci fi story about ancient gods reincarnated every ninety years, this time as pop stars. I know that doesn’t sound like a glowing endorsement but sometimes I appreciate aiming high more than concision or eloquence lol.
When I was a teenager I had a very teenage letter printed in Pete Bagge’s Hate, I was very proud.
I also have to recommend Saga. BKV is so good at an emotional gut punch splash page.
Oh you bet your ass I watched Scavenger’s Reign. Unbelieveable!
Hope no one minds if I upload a few more photos from the exhibition.
@get.up.trinity Scavengers Reign looks good. I didn’t know it, but I’ll check it out.
Gonna watch Common Side Effects, too. It’s from the same people, as far as I understood.
Oh wow, I hadn’t heard about common side effects, thanks for the heads up! Putting it on the list.
/end non-comics tangent that is my fault
yep, just finished watching it. I heard it was canceled but the last episode managed to wrap up the story just fine.
I also watched Joseph Bennett’s more recent show Common Side Effects.
Did you like it? I have a plan to watch it with the friend I watched Scavengers Reign with.
It really is art, isn’t it?
Ah yes, the work of Bisley…
And Vincent Segrelles (El Mercenario)…
Like every frame is a painting in itself.
Yup! It’s more of a suspense/thriller than a scifi but still pretty good writing, animation, etc.
Season 2 was announced so no worries about the show being cancelled.
If y’all like “comic book mutants” and underground artists, this is the book for you. Full disclosure, I did a couple of the 100+ pages in it. The “biggest name” on the book is Jim Mahfood, who’s been one of my favorites since his Generation X underground special. And now we’re on the same VERY underground Very Special?
I’m currently watching Scavengers Reign after seeing it mentioned here. Really into it! I’m a number of years / decades out of the loop on modern animation, so this might be the start of a rabbit hole.
In similar Moebius art style, I recommend Little Bird.
Frank Quietly is another artist along those lines.
