I’ve been a bit rubbish at remembering comics and manga recently (although I have been a better book reader).

The last thing that I finished that was really inspiring was this:

A few Manga I’ve been reading:

Finished:

Boku wa Mari no Naka / Inside Mari: Excellent. Took me by surprise how deep it all panned out for what is a take on classic body swap tropes. One not to comment too much on and spoil.

Currently reading:

Berserk: Took a long break after ‘the eclipse’. Got back to it and read a couple of volumes… not much to say. It’s Berserk.

Dorohedoro: Spoiling myself at the moment. Absolutely GOAT stuff, and so much fun… surprisingly heartwarming.

Prison School: I was reading on a busy train… too much boobies to read in public, so will have to report back another time

Drifting Dragons: Beautiful art, but pro-whaling propoganda. No thanks.

Mushishi - Great first volume. Beautifully subtle stories.

Sakamichi no Apollon / Kids on the Slope: Just some really good feels at the moment. Blossoming friendships and music appreciation.

I grew up on that stuff and it’s still killer. Add a few Lobo mags and some French sci-fi and all the other weirdness from 2000+/heavy metal and it’s nostalgia deluxe over here.

I had no idea the Koreans were up to something completely different so now I’m reading manhwas like Solo Leveling and the like. It’s refreshing compared to mangas with fewer tropes although they don’t mind telling tower stories with minor variations.

Can you recommend some French sci-fi comics? I also enjoy reading in French.

Glad you like it. You can find massive online readers with good interfaces if you search a bit. I’m not good with names and there are plenty of dystopic and weird sci-fi authors from France. The Incaal by Alejandro Jodorowsky is iconic and has been mentioned before.

" I became an evolving space monster" is a manhwa a little bit off the beaten path. Not for the faint of heart.

Korean comics have their own tropes and it seems like they often want to give you a hook in chapter 0 or 1 where they show highlights of the story that are complete spoilers to me. I skip chapter 0 unless I have to go back for info (hasn’t happened yet).

I’ve been reading The Metabarons by Jodorowsky. It’s wild. I wears it’s Dune influences on its sleeve, but the art is breathtakingly gorgeous

Metabarons! Such a dark one! I agree, the art is amazing, the whole thing is typically Jodorowski! Highly recommended.

I would add Enki Bilal there. The words classic and masterpiece are thrown around too liberally these days, but the Nikopol Triology is… hummm… a classic masterpiece. He has some non sci-fi stuff like Partie de chasse but most of his output is very sci fi, and all of it worth a look.

The other big classic is probably the Valerian series by Christin and Mezieres.

Personal recommendations, would be the Cycle de Cyann by Bourgeon and Lacroix, and for a more recent take check the works from Mathieu Bablet and the Le Château des étoiles series. Sci-fi? Fantasy? Both? Who cares.

Can’t go wrong with any title published by Humanoids, publisher of the aforementioned Jodorowsky-written comics, Moebius’ stuff, etc.

At least everything I’ve read from Humanoids has been great - albeit in English. I got the majority of them as a Humble Bundle.

I don’t know what the situation is with the great French and other European comic creators, but in the U.S. the original art is already valuable, for example at auction. At one time original comic pages by great artists here were sometimes thrown away, or kept by the companies. Nowadays I believe they are returned to the artists.
