I am slaving Rytm to Ableton. I have sync activated on the Rytm MIDI channel and have set clock sync delay to -18ms, which sounds tight with Live’s metronome.
I have delay compensation activated in Live’s Options menu. Problem is, whenever I add any devices to any track that need to be compensated for, like an external audio effect or external synth, the Rytm goes out of time. This is a real PITA since every time I add or remove devices the Rytm wanders off.
Is there a better way to do this? turning off delay compensation gets the Rytm on the money, but then all my synths are out out of wack!
(On a side note - is it healthy that the BPM on the Rytm wanders about when its slaved?)
Not sure on a solution as I don’t use many external FX, but BPM drift is normal. If you don’t want any drift you need to invest in an external clocking hardware.
“After adding some device that needs to be compensated the rhythm goes out of time”
Just to get it clear, if you add or remove those devices with Live NOT running then you press play after, the RYTM get out of sync anyway?
I mean this problem gets solved after pressing stop then play on Ableton?
there’s nothing wrong with your AR (or i would rather say: nothing wrong at all here). a quick web search will tell you how many people have had this issue and how they’ve solved it (read it with a little tiny bit of sarcasm)
you have to setup an audio buffer delay in ableton audio settings menu, so your VST synths will delayed a bit, and the incoming audio will match up better
it gives you an option to set how many milliseconds… and you have to play around with it for a while to get it right
its a pain in the ass, but has to be done if mixing external gear with software synths in a live situation (i.e. recording, etc.)

Sorry but there is no parameter named "audio buffer delay" on Ableton Audio Prefs. What do you mean exactly?

No it doesn’t get solved if I press stop then play. The sync is off by whatever the highest delay compensation is on any track, I think.
I seem to have found some kind of solution although its not ideal - if I set hardware latency on the Rytm external instrument device to any value higher than the delay compensation then Rytm stays in time - the trouble is I don’t know what this delay compensation is so I have to tweak it all the time, or have a very high latency.
It just seems like the clock sync should change along with the delay compensation. Having either one working or the other isn’t much use…
“Live 9.2 also introduces a number of latency-related improvements. Sets that contain Max for Live devices or third-party plug-ins now have lower latency. And automation is now fully latency compensated.”
I did search for over an hour before i posted. I’d appreciate any help.
i’m sure you did this was more to say that you’ll find many similar questions with many similar answers which all, more or less, will take you to a common answer: syncing software and hardware isn’t always a nice journey (one reason i’m not using software anymore)
OK I just tried 9.2 - M4L devices certainly cause (alot!) less latency, but if I add a few external effects to any of the tracks, the clock sync goes out exactly by the delay compensation on the track with most compensation, like before.
Hmm to bad to hear that.
Have you tried to set Ableton as Slave.
In my setup I have several stuff and the OT is master and the rest are all slaves, Ableton included. I´m not using any plug in with a noticeable latency so I can´t say if this way it adjusts.

I just tried Live as slave and it sounds much worse. Jitter, wandering BPM. Maybe a hub problem this way round.
I’ve mailed Ableton support, hopefully there is something I’m overlooking. It seems like it would be pretty easy to just offset the clock sync by the delay compensation, not sure why I can’t do that…thanks for your help.
I am all ears if someone can detail a foolproof way I’d be delighted to be proved wrong - but I kinda put that in the pigs will fly category of life stuff :)
never seen one, really!
