Classic House Swing

Hi Elektrons, just wondering what your favourite Swing setting on the Takt is to achive that Classic House Swing.
I am thinking if Ian Pooly of which i know that he is using the MOC3000 which has the Million Dollar Swing.

And do some of you get that classic Michael Jackson Swing out if the Digitakt?

This may be hotly contested, but I was never able to get the same swing feel on the Digitakt as I’ve gotten on the MPC (specifically the 1000). Maybe others can chime in. On the MPC, it’s almost too easy.

I always find this topic rather interesting/funny, as Roger Linn himself states that the MPC implementation of swing is a rather simple implementation and seems to talk about how he did it any time someone asks.

I don’t have a digitakt so I can’t chime in on that, but I just felt it would be worth sharing that the “million dollar MPC swing” isn’t some trade secret; all of these other manufacturers should be able to implement it exactly the same way (given the timing isn’t affected by other DSP implementations). Would also be curious to know if any other companies take a different approach to calculating swing.

Generally, you need to also play with the velocity to get the MPC swing feel. Elektrons swing is a little stiff without some modulation. The old MPCs had a solid clock and less resolution between beats, that may have added to the feel

Try leaving swing off and use a loop of 4 steps for your hihats with a kick under it. Then shift step 2 and 4 back (via microsteps) manually per hand and see of you can get there. Sometimes i had good results with that “method”.

And if you find out how many microsteps you need to shift you would need to do that for all the drums/sounds that are on even steps. Not the easiest way but it’s worth a try.

I’m fine with the swing on the dt :man_shrugging: no special sauce just crank it till it sounds better :joy: 60+ yes and thank you!

Unquantized playing FTW (No, I dont own a DT but this applies to every modern Elektron)

I’m not in love with the Hapax’s swing, tbh.

It moves in %'s, 50% is the middle, no swing.

Trouble is, there’s a world of difference between 50 and 60, and from 75-100 is almost completely pointless.

So it’s not possible to dial in very precise amounts of swing, most of the range is wasted.

Also, because swing is applied as a real-time effect, negative swing can’t work in the normal way, instead the on-beats are pushed right (later). I understand this, but would like an option to apply

Also, no global swing!

Love my Hapax, does so much. But I feel that swing is sooooo important and would like it to be improved!

Yes the other Part of Swing is „Velocity“.
But somehow the Digiswing does not move my Feet like MPC3k.
I think 56-58 is usable.

Im an octatrack user, so forgive me if this same trick doesnt work. But, i find using a random lfo to modulate the velocity of drum triggers gives me that swing feel in conjunction with the sequencer’s swing. Works especially well with hihats and other high frequency percussion.

Same. People always bring up the Linn interview but the swing is just a part of why a machine feels good. It also is the timing. All machines hae some level of timing discrepancies. Some feel musical and others do not. Sp1200 is a 24 ppq but has incredible feel. MPCs Much higher ppq but have incredible feel. Elektrons just do not have the same feel for whatever reason. You can still make house on them but going from an elektron to an sp1200 or MPC, you notice a pretty stark difference the more experience that you have.

66% swing for House :ok_hand:

Haha yep. 67 if you’re feeling a bit wild. It’s sooooo satisfying to tap in some drums and a bass line on the 1k and then hit that magic swing and everything snaps into place perfectly. Still my favorite machine.

I‘ll give this a try

I can’t notice any difference between MPC and Elektron. I also saw that interview with Roger and it seems to be pretty simply math…

I just turn it up and experiment, and I like to go back to it later in the process when the rhythm and track is more fleshed out. Maybe this particular track/tempo sounds better with a little more or less swing?

I’d love to hear folks elaborate a little more on the role of velocity in house swing!

Yes!
Another thing that can make a huge difference is micro timing. It’s already been touched upon in terms of unquantized playing.

I often forget (or too lazy?) to work with it but just shifting a hi-hat hit or snare can make such a big difference to the groove
