Hi Guys,
I wanted to share some bass sample chains for the Octatrack. Grab them here:
Octatrack_Chromatic Synth Bass Sample Chains
File Stats:
- 6 Stereo Synth Bass Sample Chains aligned and spaced for 16 Slice Grid
- 44.1k, 16bit
- 101MB compressed, 120 uncompressed
These sample chains contain chromatically sampled bass instruments starting from c2 to d#3 (MIDI 36-51). The sample chains have been aligned so that they are evenly spaced and ready for importing and auto Slicing via the Octatrackās Audio Editor. Each sample contains 16 notes, so youāll want to use the 16 Slice Grid.
To Use These Sample Chains:
[ul]
[li]Load the samples into your static sample pool slots.[/li]
[li]Use the Octatrackās Audio Editor to Create a 16 Slice Grid on each of the loaded sample chains.[/li]
[li]When you create the Slice Grid select āNOā when it asks to āAlign Markers to Zero-Crossesā. The Slice Grid is already evenly spaced and setup.[/li]
[li]Enable āSLICā (SLICES MODE) in your Playback Setup for the tracks you wish to use these samples on.[/li]
[li] Now your Trigs should eliminate green, each trig 1-16 will trigger slices 1-16 accordingly. [/li]
[/ul]
You are all set to play, tweak, and Plock the Chromatic Bass Sample Chains.
Fun experimenting try the following:
- Adjust the PITCH on -/+ 12 to shift the Slices down and up an octave to achieve more range.
If youāve loaded and Sliced all of the bass sample chains into your static sample pool you can use the Static Slot Lock on Trigs to change bass sounds per Trig. This allows you to Plock different Bass Sound onto your pattern!
If you find these useful and have any suggestions for improvements please send me feedback. Iām planning on making more advanced sample chains that use chromatic sampled instruments in the future.
Cheers,
Chad

thatās cool man, iām going to grab these. iāve just been using single cycle waveforms for basses on the OT. iāve thought about doing something like this myself but iām really lazy when it comes to making my own samples

huge gratitude! ā¦alwaysā¦when itās time for sharing =)
I just think this chains should be posted to that main thread about SampleChainsā¦there was one on the old forum,i believe it is back here ā¦
Iāll edit this my post if i find itā¦attaching the link!
Cheers again !

Thanks a lot for you effort! Will surely try them out
Thanks a lot for sharing. Have no proper computer (hard & software) to create chains by myself.

Hi Chad. I really like what you have done with these sample chains. I was thinking about purchasing an advanced midi keyboard like the Akai Max 25 to trigger these samples in the Octatrack, though I am unsure if this setup will work properly to record into the Octatrack a live improv. I can see that using the Static Slot Lock feature could inhibit ones creativity, but maybe itās possible to experiment these samples chromatically using the TRIG keys while the RECORD button is active. Let me know what you think. Thanks!

That is a cool idea however I donāt think there is a way to trigger a Trackās Trigs the same way you can trigger them while in Slice mode (maybe someone knows if this is possible?). Iāve tested hooking up a MIDI controller, but it only seems to trigger the Slice 1 Chromatically starting at MIDI Note #72-96. So this only stretches the first slice Up/Down an octave vs actually playing the Slices.
Other thoughts on this, I was thinking of taking the same sample pool and making chains which limit the samples to particular diatonic scales (including 16-32 notes of that scale). So if you want to work in a project in A Minor, or D Major, etc you can load a diatonic Sample Chain and Trig away!

Regarding this statement, I think you are referring to time stretching the samples? I havenāt been really impressed by the Octatrackās time stretching ability (too artifacty). Ableton seems to do a better job at this which is why I looked into your chromatic approach, though I could be doing this wrong on the Octatrack. Maybe I am asking too much of the Octatrack.

Yeah that is why I was using chromatic sampling in Sample Chains vs the normal Chromatic Mode the OT has.
There is also the normal track Trigs in the lower MIDI range (24-35). This will again only play Slice1. But you could combine that with the MIDI CC# for āPlayback Param #2ā (Start SLICE) to play any Slice you wanted. I could make a Max4Live device to do this conversion for normal keyboard trig/playback.

Chains can be created somewhat easily within the OT. The key is to start with a silent sample longer than you will need. Then you can copy and paste one sample after another, insert slice points, and trim the excess silence. Boom! Sample chain.
I would love an append sample buffer option for the live creation of chains.

Can you elaborate on this ^ @StinkyBeat ?
Can someone please upload it again ?
