Childs diseases

Hi everyone, i am thinking of buying a Rytm, but maybe i will start with an analog 4 first. Because I see people are having weird problems and frustrations, i am a little afraid to buy one. On the other hand, i have a NI Maschine, many complains on the NI forum, but i never have a problem. Are the child diseases bothering you a lot? Of do you wish you waited some more time before buying this Rytm?

Too me, right now, this machine doesn’t deserves 1500€: the OS is not finished, not enough machines and possibilities, not enough effects (they could have bring to AR the ones from the OCTA, but they didin’t…).

Clearly I wouldn’t put 1500 in the AR if I had to do it again.

By the time everything’s working perfectly and we have new machines to play with, I’m already going to be pretty familiar with this machine. That’s the way I see it anyway, for me the AR is worth it (even as it is now), YMMV as usual.

If you are looking for getting to the good stuff from the get go (and don’t mind the lack of pads), perhaps you’d prefer an A4? I’ve never owned any other Elektron boxes, aside from briefly trying to bond with an OT (didn’t marry)

I’m not bothered of any child diseases in the AR. I’m in fact currently not aware of any child diseases or bugs at the moment.

When it was new (I got one early) there was some critical bugs in the OS and it even crashed a few times. But those days are gone.

Is there “missing features” and stuff that can be improved? Sure, but things work and nothing is stopping me from making music and having fun.

Exactly my thoughts.

If they had’nt released it until it’s done a 100%, we could not already have fun with this machine.

There definitely are “teething troubles” right now but I trust Elektron to fix them.

For example, there are some (minor) UI glitches, and the sysex implementation is incomplete (e.g. doesn’t support dump requests).

The ‘synth+sample’ hybrid synthesis approach is not fully thought through, IMHO, i.e. the list of loaded samples is stored by project, and “soundkits” reference samples by RAM sample number.

This means that you cannot easily share sample-based soundkits across projects.

It would make a lot of sense to e.g. store the +Drive sample paths per soundkit, and, when a kit is loaded, auto-load the required samples into empty RAM slots and update the kit as required
(maybe even search the +Drive for the sample(-name) if it is not stored at the exact same path!)

However, don’t get me wrong: All in all, the machine is quite usable already, and most important of all, it sounds good!

What bugs me the most, though, is that you currently cannot record/playback “direct jump” pattern changes via MIDI.

(dear Elektron, please implement a new performance channel controller for this if you don’t want to change your “MIDI program change to select patterns” code!)

^ check your PMs imo

Havent had any problems with my AR…and ive only been in Elektron machines for 3 weeks and the AR is my second machine …got the A4 first because of AR not in stock when i orderd both the AR &A4. My first adventure in to hardware synth/drum machines…and im so fucking happy i went down this road. Tired of djing other peoples music made me go this way and research for many months before ordering and the machines does what i want and lived up to my expectations. The best birthday present i ever bought myself:D

although the AR is still a young machine, with all its quirks and things to fix, i don’t think it’s not worth its price (well, for us end users, cheaper is always better isn’t it? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: )
as larserik says as well, by the time the OS gets sorted, you’ll already know how to use the machine and won’t need much time to learn the new features…also, the current OS doesn’t stop you from making music that’s for sure. i’m more like: gimme more, gimme more! but good things come to those who wait once someone said
on the other hand, if you can’t be bothered waiting for OS upgrades and such, well, i would say go and get a Rythm Wolf  …when and if it will ever come out on the market

… best solution would be for Elektron to start with a lower price and then, each time something new is added to the OS, raise the price right? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

First Elektron machine. Bought it the day it was offered online. Haven’t regretted a single day.

Yeah, some issues, but to say it’s not worth $1500…

I wrote 4 new tracks this weekend.

To me, it’s worth the money. I just work around any “issues” that pop up.

I bought a rytm today. Looks amazing, sounds fantastic, but didn’t play make my won music yet

Tnx for all information that was offered by this forum members

+1

i have only gotten mine yesterday but i feel like with the rytm it’s largely about the kind of music you want to make. it’s defs not a jack of all trades.

i make uk techno and for that i feel it’s very well equipped. i can imagine that this isn’t the case for some other styles and genres.

but again i merely had it a day and it’s also my first elektron box.

I have one since 3 days. It feels very good, although it’s not that easy to start with. I wish there were some more ‘how to’ videos on this one. The startup guide is pretty good, but since I suffer on dyslexia it’s difficult to read. Especially in this times new roman.

thanks to cuckoo to create a good walkthrough.
also thanks to the sonic lab special with dateline.

The sound is very very good. first time in my life the sound feels ‘real’. probably this is the difference between analog and digital.

I decided to sell my maschine and komplete to get rid of my computer in my studio (i will not sell Ableton, for the future), to buy an analog synth. Maybe A4, maybe something else.

till now, no problems found
till now, it feels very good to play with it
the workflow isn’t that easy to understand (button combinations)
but I think I will find out… and then everything is in reach.

For the first five hours I was scratching my head. After a day with it I think the AR is really intuitive and very well designed considering how complex it is. Trig locks?? WOW! Thats all I can say, WOW! lol
