I’m seriously contemplating buying an Octatrack, but I’m not entirely sure it’s tailored to what I need in order to perform live without a laptop. I’ve watched zillions of videos but at the end of the day, I really just need to see it IRL and watch someone use it. I’ve got a Machinedrum and an Analog Four so I’m very familiar with the Elektron workflow, plocks, all that jazz, but I’m not sure how the Octatrack would handle sizeable chunks of samples (i.e. stuff I’ve recorded from my modular, long vocal samples, edited percussion stuff).
So… are there any Octatrack owners in Chicago that wouldn’t mind giving me a little tutorial or demo in exchange for some beer or coffee?
It’d be much appreciated!
If you feel like coming up to Milwaukee, I’d be glad to have a jam session and share my Elektron knowledge.
Let me save you some time here:
If you see it in person, you will buy one.
So yeah. Just buy one.
Edit: especially if you see Alerian using it. Hah
It streams from the card well. I haven’t had any problems yet, although have been limiting my samples (when combined in a track) to about 40MB per sample. However I loaded a 4 hour radio show (i.e. about 60 odd tunes) on it the other day with no issues. In short, this won’t be a problem I don’t think.
Although there is a split between static (i.e. card based) samples and flex (i.e. RAM based) samples, in reality I have rarely found the need to use Flex over Static, as you can do most stuff on static samples anyway (slicing etc) which means the length of the sample is only limited by the capacity of the card.
Hope that helps.
