I don’t have experience with the Tribit Xsound Plus 2, but I own the Tribit XSound Go, which is an earlier model that is quite similar. I think I paid less than $40 for it. It has been Wirecuttter’s budget pick for a portable Bluetooth speaker for a few years. I’ve had no aux-latency issues with it, and no Bluetooth issues apart from the periodic ones every Bluetooth device suffers from. It doesn’t do deep bass, but I don’t like bass-heavy speakers anyway, and it reaches a good volume. Based on my experience, I would certainly consider the Plus 2 for a slight upgrade.
I picked up a Tribit MaxSound Plus last year. It sounds great but no go with my gear. There is an awful lag when using the aux port. Still use the speaker daily for listening though!
thank you guys for sharing your experiences. Isn’t it crazy how huge the differences seem to be, even from the same manufacturer?
I think they figure that nearly all of their purchasers just want something to take to the beach or a picnic, and care more about portability, volume, and battery life than anything else. If some of the features they provide (like the ability to link speakers up in stereo) increase latency? Who’s gonna notice?
voombox rock portable speaker
sounds good, has significant audio latency, on turning on/off does very loud obnoxious sound
im convinced that all portable speakers that have bluetooth will have latency, because they pass audio through the same processor regardless if its aux or wireless
EDIT: its possible to live with latency if you only use step recording modes
EDIT 2: voombox rock also has a quirk where it will completely obliterate bass frequencies if you set volume above some invisible limit. it also adjusts volume down automatically on lower battery levels. it also resets volume on reboot. in other words, dont get one for making music.
very true, I mean it is quite a specific application… after a lot of research I will probably end up buying the soundcore Motion+ which has 0s (!) latency and still seems to have a good sound and even Hi-Res…
Agreed! It sounds great, rugged, great price and battery last forever! When I found it was too laggy for my gear, I just shrugged!
in my experience, this bluetooth speaker does not have noticeable latency when connected via aux.
ive tried a few others and experienced the horrible aux latency and it is nowhere to be found here with ASIMOM. it definitely has annoying aspects like no visual volume indicator, annoying sounds on boot up and boot down, generally not the most ideal. but the latency is minimal to nonexistent at least!
I don’t hear any latency with either JBL speakers I have via Aux. Doesn’t mean there isn’t any but I didn’t notice it.
I have the xiaomi mi speaker 2, but they are very hard to find these days, no perceivable latency and dare I say it sounds flat. Ultra portable as well, and looks good, full aluminum construction. The other one which is superb is IK multimedia iLoud bluetooth speaker if you can find one somewhere, it’s basically a portable studio monitor.
Hard to go wrong with a set of these beige beauties. Not sure how they sound for music but the sounds of 3D Space Pinball are splendid!
Joking aside, I recently bought the JBL Go2 for this purpose, and it’s worked fine. Wish the bass response was slightly better, but for the size it does alright. I haven’t noticed latency with the aux in, but I also haven’t checked it too closely. It’s been adequate for the music stuff I’ve done with it. Paid about $35
Hmmm. Elevator Sound’s newsletter has just alerted me that they have Minirig 4’s in stock, and that they are made in Bristol. I will be visiting in person in a couple of weeks…
[Minirigs have no wired latency.]
Always been curious about these, so please report back. The little subwoofer is just so goofy
Yeah I won’t get the subwoofer. Still not sure about the main speaker itself. But I haven’t been able to do anything for drone day since moving here, would be nice.
Minirigs are solid and sound great. I’ve been using them inside / outside for years and I haven’t been gentle. Zero problems. Mine all came with a lanyard-tethered fitted case.
If you can spring for the subwoofer, it’s worth it.
If anyone has questions, hit me up!
Everything I’ve read about Minirigs says they are solidly built and have good sound. My uncertainty is more about whether I personally need a better-quality portable speaker. I don’t tend to inflict my music on others, including my partner, who has to work from home in a 100m^2 apartment. But an M8 will eventually find its way to me, and I already have a bunch of music options on my iPhone, so it’s tempting.
Fwiw I’ve found anything in Bose’s lineup of consumer portable wireless speakers (like their Soundlink line) to be latency free for the aux in, and have struggled to find other modern speakers with the same lack of latency — in case you want something other than the minirig solution
I’ve ordered the minirig 4 the other day, hopefully i will have it somewhere next week. Had to look for some shops to buy it in the EU.
Im curious about it after i saw comparison videos with JBL. They sound good.
I tried some portable speakers (battery powered). A bit “higher” price in range as i found out that going lower, im not satisfied.
JBL charge ( last one with aux port ).
Sold it because it goes into some power safe mode when there is no sound after a few seconds. When play, you will miss the first second or so.
Bose soundlink revolve+
Amazing speaker, good balanced. But i was missing something on the low. Went with me to Asia and played there on the streets. Sold it afterwards.
Harman kardon go & play ( are many times in sale )
Also an amazing speaker, although the low-mid is boosted, like JBL, which results in hard bass.
Its a bit too big for my taste to be portable.
I am really interested in the Minirig 4 with sub. But now at the end of the month all bundles are sold out except purple. I really want it in black lol. Maybe buy just one to try, but I want to avoid the shipping cost twice. They are cool little speakers i have had an interest in for a few years already
I was considering the purple! You’ll at least know it’s yours. The problem with black gear is that everyone has black gear. I have a purple tag on my rollaboard so I can spot it on the luggage carousel. [Edit: why is my rollaboard on the luggage carousel? Because the damn airline makes me gate-check it because “we have a full flight” but if I try to check it before security they want to charge me $$$ to do so. Sorry, this belongs in the “miserable git” thread, doesn’t it?]
