Changing patterns with midi foot controller

Simple question: I want to use a machinedrum like and old school drum machine, and to change patterns with a foot controller while i play guitar bass or synth.
Which midi controllers would work? I’m damn sure that the behringer fcb1010 will do the trick but i was interested in something a bit smaller and lighter. i just want next pattern / previous pattern / start / stop functionality. nothing fancy.
i read the manual and it said that i received midi note data, is that correct? so CC wouldn’t work with the machinedrum?
