I want to achieve one of these config, to connect my OT to my RS7000:
OT as master > RS as slave. When the OT change pattern, the RS follow and change to the same pattern
RS as master > OT as slave. When the RS change pattern, the OT follow and change to the same pattern
I know that to change pattern on the RS via midi, I need to send a sysex message looking like that:
F0 43 7E 00 ss 7F F7
NOTE: ss is the section number of the pattern and can have a value from 00H to 0FH. (00 = section A, 01 = section B,… 0F = section P)
But how to send sysex msg with the OT?
With the other solution, I need to know how the OT can change pattern via midi. The manual doesn’t seem to explain it.
Sorry cant really help,
but from my experience with the FC footswitch, i had to use MIDI note messages rather than Sys ex messages, i think youll have to find what midi note represents the pattern change…
Pattern changes are via program changes on OT, see page 42 in manual.
It´s not clearly stated as program changes (says pattern changes in manual), and this info isn´t in the midi reference section at the end either. However, MIDI OX reveals status data as Cx + data value, which in fact are program changes.
OK, thanks. I’ll look at this. I hope the pattern change can be done with program changes like manually, I mean without being obliged to wait the end of the pattern.
The more I use the OT, and the more I think Elektron should really work on its sequencer which is really not a good one (even if the MD one is worst…). Things that took me a second to understand and manage with my Yamaha, now take me months…
The program change solution works pretty well. When I send PC 000 000 000, the OT goes to Pattern A1, with PC 000 000 001 it goes to Pattern A2, and so on…
This means for me that I can now use a real sequencer with the OT slaved and synced.
Well… not such a good news in fact because when the pattern changes there is a latency and the OT is late on the tempo compared to the RS. I don’t know if it’s due to the OT or to the RS. Did anyone had lag problems of this type with other gears or with Ableton? Any solution?
After some investigations, it appears to me that the problem is not due to a midi lag, but to the way the OT changes patterns: one cannot go under the limit of a 2/16 length. I think that it’s not a lag problem because:
I tried to send external midi clock via Midiclock to neutralize the RS 7000 clock: nothing changed
I tried to change patterns manually on the RS and on the OT: no more lag
I tried to change the parameter length before the OT change pattern (4/16, 8/16, 16/16): the OT keeps on the tempo but it’s obviously not a solution because the RS and the OT are counter-beat
So, the solution seems to be an OS update that would make possible to set the OT to 0/16 length before changing pattern.
BTW: I really don’t understand the reason for this 2/16 limitation. For me, that doesn’t make any sense.
Once again, I have to face the strange and unprofessional limitations of elektron gear, which causes lot of lost of times and which impeach the coordination between two gears. That’s very annoying.
Just send a B midi note at the same time you send the PC: the B note oblige the OT sequencer to restart. Now, it can be always on time when slaved and synced to an external sequencer. And now, with my RS sequencer set as master, I can randomize freely any OT or MD track, and make some funny drills and breakbeats without being counter-beat.
Hum… the fascinating thing with elektron gears is that every solution found brings its new problem to solve… Now, as my external sequencer is sending a restart message in order to slave correctly the OT, I discover that the OT rearm the one trig shots each time, so I can’t play any more long samples as they always stop before ending…
I’m wondering: I play electronic music since the 1980’s. I had a lot of different machines. But I never spent so much time trying to solve absurd problems since I bought elektron gear. Before, I just used to play music. Now, I need to spend my time reading a manual, asking questions in forums, instead of composing. Machines made for engineers and geeks, not for musicians, I guess. Feel like throwing them in the fire to get rid of them!
