Unfortunately he was found by his rescuers 2 years ago with a large chemical burn on his shoulder & paws, which has miraculously largely healed except for some bare skin!
So we still keep him in a shirt so he can’t over-groom the furless skin and re-open old wounds (literally).
I had orange cats growing up, one of which was feisty & extremely intelligent.
Back in the day of tape based phone answering machines, he would play back messages to entertain himself. Lots of missed messages until we figured out what he was doing.
Awesome story! Our orange cat, Bernie, is super shy and doesn’t do much on his own, but given his backstory, that’s not surprising. I mean, he lost his mom when he was a tiny fluff ball and had to be bottle fed. So he’s doing great for what he’s been through!
Krypto on the other hand must have a super cat mom. From what I’ve heard she has had kittens several times (she’s sterilized now) and he grew up with lot’s of time playing outside, so I guess the mom teached her kitten very useful stuff. For example, he opens packages all by himself! He just bites in a line until he can open it. When we had all his siblings here for a few weeks, they also did the same thing. We had to hide all the food and treats on top of the highest shelfs.
He also opens doors, climbs trees and he loves water so much, every time he hears the tap, he has to check it out. He plays with the water with, sticks his head under the tap. Crazy little guy.
4-5 years ago, we moved to a new house around 1km down the road. We also bought a GPS collar for our cat as we were worried he might get confused and find his way back to our old place. We kept him indoors the first few weeks after moving, but after that it only took a few further weeks for him to make the connection and locate our old place.
For a couple of years, he traveled back and forth several times a week, probably feeling he had to watch over both places (he even snuck into our old home a couple of times, how embarassing…).
In the beginning we were worried about his well-being, and afraid he might get lost. Especially since a couple of years earlier he went missing for almost nine months, before he was finally found – in a prison! - 12km from our home. We went back to our old area and brought him home several times, but it had no effect. Luckily his traveling passage was through the woods, no cars or traffic. But as time passed by, he seemed to enjoy his travels so we just kept monitoring him. What amazed us was the distances that he walked, even when going other places than our old home. Up to 4-5 km a day.
We stopped using the collar when we felt secure, and accepted that his travels are part of his well-being. He has stopped going back to our old home, we think. At least we’ve had no reports from former neighbours, who used to keep an eye out for him after we moved. His age probably prevents him from taking very long trips these days, but we’ve long accepted that being outdoors is an integral and important part of his well-being.
I recently moved my workout inside due to cold in the garage. They had the most concerned look when I was working out! One even jump on my lap while doing bench presses!
my friends cat Sybil aka Bilson aka Bebo out in Philly, one of the best boys around. had the privilege of living with him for a year. like walks in a mesh backpack and he can fetch a toy mouse like no other
