How about compact fax machines?
I had an alarm clock for like 27 years that looked just like that! lol
Oh yeah, I had my fax machine modded:
Yamaha SU700 has a nice suite of answering machine functions conveniently located in the centre:
Looks more like a coaster to me!
Nice. It has a convinient knob that goes from slow to fast. I suppose that’s so people can skip grandma talking about the holidays and they can slow it down when the pastor called “I diiiiddeen’t ssseeee yoouuu iiinnn chuuurchhhh laaaaasst suuunndaaayyy”. I bet that’s fun.

Rather fond of this 90s answering machine with memory slots to save messages and a speed control for friends who talk too fast/slow

had one these for five mins and realised i had been ripped off
I have fond memories of that one, as it was my first answering machine.
I’m still receiving calls on that number to this very day.
what I love about this genre of roland rhythm machine is it dances right on the borderline between answering machine and kitchen appliance. Literally had an old blender which was spot on that shade and shape. Put a glass blender pitcher on top and leave it on the counter, I couldn’t tell the difference.
For a moment I thought you were speaking of samplers / chips, ala https://moltenmusictechnology.com/beneath-the-bush-of-ghosts-quad-lofi-sampler-based-on-an-answering-machine-chip/
I suppose my most answering machine lookin mothersampler was the Yamaha SU-10
i wonder what the settings would say if it were a blender?
how many shades of blending are there, perhaps it would have a hot cold setting and maybe a bits and no bits setting - even a ferment setting!

bohm!
that’s nearly an accordian.
