There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot of enthusiasm around the Carbon8, but after listening to youtube videos and a very short listen at a local shop it just seems like the most beautiful thing ever. Ultra smooth, extremely pleasant evolving ambient pads, perfectly expressive plucks. Just seems like ambient heaven. So I kind of want to buy one, but I already have a multi/poly (and an assortment of elektrons). Anyone care to chime in to potentially talk me off the edge, or give me a little shove?
I had the module for a brief time. I liked the sounds but didn’t really gel with programming sounds myself. Mainly I didn’t enjoy the UI experience. That’s all very personal of course YMMV.
The price puts me off for now but the sound is excellent.
modulation options/slots are limited on modal the argon8 which is why I sold it. This crimps the ability for the joystick to truly be played expressively on the x/y axis. I did see this in the manual, so I’m not sure how many modulation destinations it can do on the carbon 8:
“The 4-axis joystick can be assigned to a huge range of modulation destinations and can be
‘locked’ in place when desired.”
I’m not sure what they consider huge but it definitely let me down if it’s like the argon8
Pretty sure it’s the same architecture. 8 slots with freely assignable source and destination, plus 4 fixed slots that cover some of the most common modulations.
From the Carbon manual. Argon is the most limited with 2 LFOs. It’s cool how many basic params you can modulate, such as aeg attack and such. You also need to remember some limitations such as lfo 1 being the global and only it can modulate the fx etc. I feel that my Cobalt really opens up when I add 2 more LFO from Digitone.
I wish these were a little bit cheaper. Can’t see these flying off the shelves costing 700+ even for the module. It’s a shame, but they are a small company. I really like the company and their support is very friendly. Sounds and FX quality are top notch. Their engineering decisions are decent balancing hands-on usability and more ‘nice-to-have’ features. The UI can feel clunky at first but once you understand it, it becomes a lot easier to navigate.
i remember reading this for the argon 8m but still came up with a message when trying to map the joystick that the destination was not mappable
