I seem to still get it, but I see no lights on the front of the 2i2 is that normal? Also in AUM in can’t see it there either. iPad appears to be charging too.
Maybe the USB powered hub is the way to go?

If there are no lights on the front of the 2i2, then you have not made the connection to the iPad, which you would expect if you are getting the message. The front lights up when things are good.
Let everything sleep for a while and then try the order I suggested (if you get the message, disconnect and try again, I think on one of my experiments I had to try twice). I agree with @chr1sdanger, though, this is not something to rely on, even if you are not in front of a live audience.
Yep one like that. Alternatively you could use a hub that is USB A and not USB C but that adapter is probably the cheapest solution.
Hmm so the Anker Power USB device has arrived and I’ve got that powered from the wall and I can see the hubs power light and I thought I’d then go from the USB hub just to the 2i2 and same issue, flashes on and then goes off.
Also just direct from the wall socket with a USB plug socket adapter with the 2i2 USB cable to the 2i2 and same issue, so no USB hub or iPad involved this time.
The only port I can get it to work on is the orange USB port on my laptop, nothing else I try it on works.
Check if there is a firmware update for your audio interface and try to flash it, because that is strange. The next step would be to go to a store with all this gear and try it on a different 2i2. Could be an interface problem.
To my knowledge that interface doesn’t have a power light. It only has a host connection light. This would not light up when connecting only to the hub or only to the wall. But would light up if it’s connected to a laptop.
If you connect it to the powered hub and connect the hub to the iPad does it work? Or are you still waiting on that other adapter to make it happen?
On mine, when I plug it directly into a USB power adapter (Apple 35W) and nothing else, the rings around the gain knobs flash for a second, but the green Direct Monitor OO (not O) light stays on. I tried a 5W adapter, the smallest one I have, and it did the same. Firmware, cable, adapter, has to be one of these.
Do you have direct monitoring on? What if you turn off direct monitoring? Does that light also stay lit when not fully connected?
If it’s not connected to anything, the Direct Monitoring button has no effect. In what I was describing earlier, the 2i2 is connected to only power, nothing else.
Thanks all good now, not sure what I was doing wrong . I have another question about controlling knobs on the iPad externally, but I’ll do a separate post
Can you share a picture of your final setup? I think I am having the same issue. I am using the iPad 2017, with the lightning camera adapter (and charging port).
Connected to the camera adapter, I have a powered usb hub (5V), into which the Scarlett 2i2 is connected. The Scarlett will not show any lights or signs of turning on. It is a second generation.
