Can any synth be a vocoder?

This video has a nice walkthrough of the different technologies

True, IMHO. I own a Roland VP-330 and the stack of VCFs, VCAs and VCOs that power that thing make it sound quite a lot different than a VA or plug in. I own two VAs with vocoders, a K-Station Rack and a Virus TI, there is no mistaking their vocoders for the VP-330.

You could do this with most analog vocoders. The OB6 would run as the carrier signal, bypassing the VCOs in the vocoder.

Thx @anon64972012.
Now I know that I would find some good use to a vocoder (drums through synth, yum).
And that the word ā€œautotuneā€ makes my ears puke :face_vomiting:

It is mad fun to do stuff like that. Run a radio broadcast as the carrier and run a drum loop as a modulator, etc. Loads of fun to experiment.

I love and use vocoder a ton. I am a V256 guy out of necessity but there’s no question the most interesting development in affordable analog vocoding has got to be the new behringer vp330 knockoff. I’m pretty sure anolog vocoders are basically non-existent because of how complex they are to build for what consumers essentially approach with a kitschy effect type budget. There is a holy grail vocoder, the Syntovox spx 216, on ebay right now for $2600 usd. Man if I could only afford it…
Btw the EHX is quite capable of having any manner of instrument act as either carrier or modulator. It’s pretty good bang for the buck, great footprint, but in no way approaches the richness of analog vocoding.

These true analog devices will have between 10-20 VCFs, VCAs and VCOs. These were never cheap devices when they were new.

I’m really excited for others that will have a chance to own the B clone of the VP. We live in charmed times.

Waiting to check that one out, if it delivers they are going to sell a lot of them!

There is a new Waldorf stringy vocoder released: Waldorf Streichfett Keyboard, STVC. Was a bit pricey so I did not follow up on that one.

Found this video… If you just want to have fun without going hardware, might be very well sufficient…

I’m struggling to finding on the behringer, it sounds like they were teased at the beginning of the year.
Is it’s release uncertain?

I think the B drummachines in the making have high priority with holiday season approaching, so I hope spring 2019 for the vocoder, but who knows. We have to wait 'n see. Veni, vidi velcro: I came, I saw, I stuck around

The waldorf looks/sounds rad! Want to hear more. Wish these new vocoders came as rack or desktop modules though. No need for keys here.

So every one is clear about this: a talk box and a vocoder are different things.

Auto-Tune (trade name) and techniques similar are not vocoders either.

They are similar, but distinctly different, and the sounds produced are different too.

Roland VT-4 could be a good shout as well. Autotune, robot, vocoder, harmony, delay and reverb in one box.

I have a VT-4 on order, maybe here this week they say

Let us know how you find it, I’m really tempted as well!

Will do, I had the VT-3 but didnt like the no midi control also hard to use the auto tune accurately.

Have you been following along with the megathread on GS?

I use the roland vt 3 as an effect for my synths, never used it for voice.
