Are C64’s highly sort after these days? I have one with a power supply and tape deck thingy that i’ve never used before. Bought it for about 20 quid and it came with a copy of Prophet 64. I thought i would be making C64 electronic music with it, but it was too much effort to set up and get running.
Quite sought after, the original PSU’s have a habit of going bad so probably best to buy a modern replacement, as they can take out some of the chips if they go. There are quite a lot of modern peripherals available such as sd card readers, wifi modems, internal upgrades, modern replacement parts, cartridges and so on.
Here in the UK typical price for a working C64 is between £50-£80 just for the computer, the PSU and tape deck are not worth much because most people will use better modern alternatives for those.
Thanks, whats the best way to test because I’m not even sure it works to be honest. Is there an adapter for modern monitors?
Just need a tv or monitor with composite input, and the cable, you can get composite cables on ebay if you don’t have one.
MSSIAH and HardSID user here.
I was just thinking about how MSSIAH can use four potentiometers (“paddle controllers”) on the joystick ports … and how this seems very similar to CV…? Could it theoretically be possible to control e.g. MSSIAH Bassline from the A4/AK’s CV outs?
I’m definitely not the person to figure this out … I remember it’s the SID which controls the pot readers, and I’m not going to blow my SID(s) wiring up something sketchy
Technically quite possible with a circuit in between to protect the C64, a simple and safe way would be to use vactrols but it might take a bit of experimenting to get the values right such that they work across a usable and predictable range.
You could (BUT I DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!) just connect directly to the pot x/y pins and ground to the A4 CV outs and limit the CV range of the A4 to 5v. The reason it is risky is if you don’t set it up right, or accidentally change the CV parameters it could damage the SID.
I was surprised that mojo didn’t win first place! Really great demo both visually and thematically
Hard to beat Bonzai! I love all of their recent ones. Unboxed, Bromance, etc.
I also love the scroller wars they were having for a while with Genesis Project
They’re good demos . Some clever bitmap scrolling / border sprites and things. The one with lots of game snippets impressed me … it’s been over 30 yrs since I made c64 games and they’re still innovating in 3d/ character / sprite muktiplexors .
Amazing demos, I am awestruck by these guys squeezing the C64 well beyond what was ever thought possible.
Some of those scrollers with the scaling and sine shifting look like something that would require some kind of specialized blitting chip. It’s ridiculous!
The music compo at X was nothing but amazing. One of my favourites:
Also really liked ”Ballad for Jeff” by Shogoon.
Nice!
Old favorites!!!
That Miami Vice track is among my favorite pieces of music EVER SID or otherwise. It’s gorgeous!
I love Matt Gray’s remakes of all these songs, including Miami Vice, The Way Of The Exploding Fist and International Karate. The band Fastloaders has recently released heavy guitar based remakes with their C-64 Rocks album. All these remakes demonstrate the greatness and potential of the originals.
And if you want to analyse how many of these songs are made (or want to play them on a Sidstation and compatibles) here’s a demo of some new tools: Browser-based ASID player for Sidstation and others
