after the realization that my current setup doesn’t provide the features I need, I decided to go full Elektron and buy an Octatrack. I watched many videos on the functionality and I’m amazed at how deep you can dive into that machine.
Consequently, I looked up some used machines on ebay and other sites, then I found a used MKI. I did search this forum for “Does it still make sense to buy the machine”-like posts but they are all about two years old (or even more), but I would really like to have some input from you guys.
I already know about the difference between the MKI and II regarding the encoders, the display, the backlight of the track-buttons and so on, but would really like to know if I’m missing something or simply just should go for it.
For additional info: the machine is in top condition, everything works fine and goes for around 700€/800$/600£
I liked the experience of the MK2 a bit better overall (more buttons, clearer lights, better knob response, etc) but at the time the price difference was only a couple hundred. Looks like now MK1s are about half the price, which is a no brainer if you’re on a tight budget.
I bought mine used around 8 years ago, it needed a new battery installed some years ago. Otherwise no issues with it. I don’t know the advantage specks for the mkll but i don’t like the look of it. Like mine to be black and if i had a little extra cash I would buy it again.
I got an mk1 used from Reverb and it’s the bees knees. Your hard work will be rewarded and you’ll never really understand the thing its in entirety. Like a Swiss Army knife. You will rediscover ideas and new ways of doing things which you almost forgot existed, and they have been sitting in your jeans pocket for 2 years. Then you’ll cut yourself free and find your way out of the jungle. The OT, will, of course, work perfectly and take all the credit. It’s a humbling experience. Just do it!
Unless you can find an MKII for <$1000, just go with the mki.
Couple things to note… I recommend making sure you open it up once you get it to check the battery for corrosion (unless the seller will do that before you purchase) and ensure all the outputs work properly/encoders all respond well to turns and the fader works properly.
I might be in the minority but I prefer the MK1. Had to downgrade for financial purposes months back.
I like the old Rams style industrial design, the larger screen, and the simpler LEDs, and the bank letters below the step buttons.
Yes, i do have to be a little more careful with not overloading the inputs for some reason, but it just makes me use my ears more.
The only things I miss about the MK2 was being able to use my 12V battery pack. Since 6V are difficult to arrange.
Dedicated save project button was also nice, but not a deal breaker.
The AED and Rec3 buttons, and encoder waveform Nav labels, thought I’d miss those but don’t.
