Alright OT users, time for a beginner question. As I’m working my way though learning the OT’s features, I’m starting to think about how I will use it live.
Let’s imagine I have a song that consists of:
3 tracks: Bass, Drums, Synth
3 parts: Verse, Chorus, Bridge
Now I imagine that for the intro / outro, those will consist of variations of the 3 parts so I can just mix parts in and out and maybe do some tricks with scenes to make it interesting.
What I’m wondering is how you would build the basic structure of your song.
Do you create loops for each track/part and use different patterns to change between them? Do you create samples that have a verse, chorus, and bridge and then use slices locked to scenes to transition?
I know there’s more than one way to skin this cat, but I’m just looking for some ideas from people who’ve done this.
Right now my songs are composed in Ableton Live (arrangement view) and I am pretty sure I want to use flex machines for the added flexibility, rather than static machines. I’m not looking to press play and walk away. I want to manually “launch” each part so that if we decide to extend a chorus we can do that. Or if the guitar player misses the change back to a verse, I can compensate. Stuff like that.
Ideas?
Totally missed this thread and just started a VERY similar one

Woops
In the same boat, trying to work out how to translate things, especially stuff thats pre written its kinda tricky. I imagine its easier when its all written in the OT.
I would use a pattern for each part, but that’s because I’m a step sequencer person…
Given there’s only 4 parts per bank, I think it will be 1-2 songs per bank max with the patterns being used to distinguish different movements. The nice thing with the 4 part limitation is that I can feel free to use more patterns per song, thus making arrangement changes easier on myself. I was envisioning maybe 3 patterns per song. But I think in most cases I will need at least 1-2 parts per song, limiting me to maybe two songs of similar mood/tempo/etc. per bank.
It’s starting to come together and each time I play with my OT the light bulbs are coming on in terms of how I will use it in a live situation.
Yesterday I figured out how to change trig modes which was a huge epiphany. I was under the impression you couldn’t trig slices with the trig buttons. DOH! That makes things so much easier!
I just dumped on of my thoughts on it in nevadine’s post…
bit much to post it everywhere… but in case you missed it

there ya go… I think tarekith added a link there to his website
which is filled with all kinds of good ideas and good thoughts
so…
Thanks.
If a mod happens to pop in here perhaps these two threads could be merged since they’re pretty much the same thing…
