It’s hard to tell from pictures and the dr202 is a much wider machine, but I noticed that the bttery covers look very similar, the dr202 just runs horizontally instead of front to back. Can you confirm whether or not they’re interchangeable? I’m keeping my eye out for a loose cover for sale and it would be convenient if the dr-202 battery door was an option as well, unlikely as that may be.
I just checked and can confirm that they are identical
Kinda strange, but Keesj (owner of SP-Forums) Posted today that they are re opening registration for new users on Sp-Forums. However now to join there is a one time $10.00 membership fee to finalize account.
For further info!
eh what… that’s interesting, does it come with a t-shirt
times is tough.
That’s one way to pay rent.
Too bad though as I was kinda into the idea of trying it out over there but probably not for $10. Nothing against them tho. Gotta do what you gotta do.
Don’t know what happened but that guy who really wanted to join the SP forums seems to have gotten his account here suspended…
Yeah, I wanted to give it a go as well. Trying to save up for the dreaded TR-1000 though, so I’m hoarding spare change.
While I would be far more likely to post over in SP Forums if they had modern forum software like this, the early 2000s forum software also fits the aesthetic over there, so it probably wouldn’t be the same vibe.
tastefully done
Folks.
I’m trialing the Decimort 2 plugin from D16 to see if it might be a viable replacement for my SP-202 (in some ways I’m trying to convince myself to keep the 202 but could do with freeing up some CASH $$$). I just use it for capturing samples as an audio processor as I love its flavours.
I’ve dialed in a setting here that I’m fairly convinced is IDENTICAL to the 202 (Standard mode, which is what I mostly use). I’d like some second opinions. Anyone recon any magic is being lost here?
To make it fair I’ve just labelled them A and B.
A:
B:
Similar-ish, but not the same. I would however make the point that it sounds good either way and it’s more important to free up cash if you need it rather than to have the exact authentic low fidelity standard sound of an SP-202. Also, the 202 will still exist in the future if you wanted to buy it again.
I mentioned a bit upthread that you can get a Roland MS-1 for about half the cost of an SP-202 (or less). It can sample in several grades and there is also a way to use it as an effect rather than sampling into it and then sampling out of it, so with your workflow it might be better.
On the other hand you might be perfectly satisfied with using a plugin to the same ends.
Yes I ended up doing more A/B and actually got them a bit closer - with certain monitoring they are identical but the differences come out with different setups.
You make the key point though, that they are both ‘good’ and whatever difference there is probably isn’t important. It’s the closest I’ve gotten with software and the filters in the plugin are also very nice.
What the 202 is very good at is keeping clarity in the highs (that don’t get lost with the sample rate) whilst keeping the noise floor low. It’s like it has a little frequency bump - which is hard to get with software I’ve tried as you also bump the noise in the dither.
