I’ve buy a good condition Boss DR-5 to write some sequences and have a chord matrix… But for me it is really difficult to program sequences… I read and watched manuals and those really old tutorials but I cannot use it easily.
The DR-5 is for sure a very old and basic unit, but it is fairly simple to use and can be a lot of fun. What instruments are you trying to sequence? What problems are you having? Are you using Step Write or Realtime Write to make patterns?
I tried some month ago the two situations. But gates and quantize are a real big deal for me. I am not able anymore to sequence real time writing alone, real time + quantize will be even more problematic as gates.
I’ trying to use it with OT and Analog four. Would like to write in the DR5 some chord sequences which go thru an OT midi channel + arp which will be sent and recorded in the A4 (or not recorded maybe).
So about quantizing I don’t know… Is 64/16 the longest sequence possibilities ?
What note of quantizing can I choose to have a 4/4 sequencing ? And for a 16 step Sequencing ?
So many questions but I’m sure this is not so complicated. But yeah, even has a step writing which can be really convenient I think I don’t know how to just write chords, I know the arrow stuff, but don’t understand the lenght of the sequences… What is the most long sequence per pattern possible ?
Thank you…
Timing ? Is Timing changing the lenght of patterns ?
Time signature : Is 64/16 = 64/64 on an Elektron machine ?
Gate : Did you have to be concerned/ chenge gate when you use it live ?
Menu, patterns : If I want to work on my own projet I have to go pattern 200 right ?
If you want to have a techno sequence : pretty quantized sending arps… What settings will you choose ?
An other important question What about deleting chords ? Is this possible ?
I downloaded the manual + found a french version but don’t have the ergonomic paper version so it’s not so easy.
But I will re-read it in parallel of this thread…
I’m sure I will one day have fun with this machine and I’m sure it can be a really good Elektron Friend…
Really good to send note and live play… Do you use it to sequence live also ? Because sequencing OT, then changing key/tonality parts, etc can be interesting I think…
The unreliability of the audio input pitch detection feature also provides some eccentric possibilities for generating sequences.
This look really interesting… How does it work ? What are trigging received note?
In the English manual, Chapter 3 Creating patterns, initial settings for pattern write are:
time signature
pattern name
quantize resolution
For the quantize resolution, there are nine values from 1/4-note to 1/192-note.
The instructions for making the settings are:
1 Select Pattern mode
2 Select a user pattern
3 Move through the available pages with the arrow keys to select values for:
Time signature/Pattern length in the range from 1/4 to 64/16
Naming the pattern
Then, to use Step Write:
1 Enter Step Write mode
2 Use the tempo/data knob to select the Quantize value
3 Select the track and kit that you want to use
4 Press Start
5 Use FWD or BWD to move to a step
6 Enter a note
7 Repeat 5 and 6 until your patternis complete
8 Press Stop
Yes.
You can choose for yourself.
Yes.
You should try all the settings to see which ones you like.
You can delete events (either notes or chords) in realtime or in Step Edit Mode.
See Chapter 8 of the manual. You can connect a guitar to Guitar In jack on the back of the DR-5. The DR-5 can listen to the pitch of the guitar signal to write melodic or drum patterns, or apply an amplifier simulation to the guitar sound, or act as a guitar tuner. None of these functions work as well as a dedicated unit.
