Welcome to the reboot of the bi-weekly record diving extravaganza!
I’m your host @malus_mons! So this was always a fun mission brief because its quick and easy with no genre limitations. There’s also a few new samplers and sampling grooveboxes that have been released since we last did this: Tonverk, TR-1000, MPC Live 3 and Sample. Wow, that’s a pretty decent line-up!
First of all shoutout to the other mission briefs currently going on:
A few months ago I was talking to a friend about listening and collecting records. He is really into it but I had sold off my first massive growing up collection years ago when moving across the country. I hadn’t really been interested until I found a stack of 45s from the 80s. Hearing the music I grew up listening to and loving was amazing. So I decided to start building a library again but with only 80s releases particularly RnB, Funk, and Electro. I have been collecting some good stuff and I had been thinking this is a good genre to sample from in this context because there’s something for everyone’s tastes.
There are no rules except the file limitation on uploading mp3s to the forum. You can always use your bandcamp or soundcloud and share from there.
Without further ado, for our first reboot edition of the biweekly, I chose “When I Think of You” by Janet Jackson from the album Control.
This album is full of bangers but i chose this because it is my favorite but also the chords at the beginning are so sweet and there’s also the cool ooo ahh vocal break at the end

I would add Hyperpop as a direct descendant of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis work in the studio from this era too, they really had a maximalist metallic synth vibe. Check this out:
