Better approach to Function + Mute

Function Mute is great but I think that for some situations it could be better implemented.

Let say you are working on Perf mode, then you want to change some Mute states at once, then back to Perf mode.

In the actual workflow (please correct me if I´m wrong) you have to:

  1. Press Mute
  2. Press and hold Function
  3. Press Pads you want to mute/un-mute
  4. Release Function at a particular musical time
  5. Press Perf to return to previous working mode

This procedure involves to click on three different buttons.

I think this whole process will be a lot simpler if the Mute button acts as a Temporary Mute+Function button when holden, this way to do the same you should:

  1. Press and hold Mute (mode changes to Mute)
  2. Press Pads you want to mute/un-mute (they get blue as when function is pressed)
  3. Release Mute at a particular musical time (this processes the mute changes and send you back to the previous working mode)

This procedure involves clicking on a single button.

I think is a lot easier, fast, and accurate in musical tempo terms.

May be there is already implemented some way to achieve something like this and I just missed, please let me know if that is the case.

best!

PS, the same could be applied to the Chromatic Mode button.

When I hit the Mute button, I expect to be in the Mute menu. So I think your idea is cool, but I’d like to make sure that a short press of the Mute button still takes you to that menu. Only a long press would toggle to Mute menu temporarily and exit when released.

secretmusic,

If you release the Mute button without pressing any pad, you stay in Mute mode no matter how long you hold it.

The trigger for the “workflow” is not the actual time you hold the Mute mode button, but the fact that you press a pad while still holding it.

That’s a pretty cool idea, I’m all for it.

Yes that’s a really good idea! +1

+1, I would love to see this implemented.

This is a very, very good idea.

I would add one point to this spec :

When you use Mute+Pads like you described above, thus enabling what is currently the “function+mute” mode, you are allowed to switch to another mode while keeping the Mute button held.

  • Mutes are held until you release the Mute button.

This would allow, for instance, to release some mutes and switch a scene at the exact same time :

  • Hold Mute button
  • Select which pads you want to mute/unmute
  • Press Scene button => enter Scene mode
  • Release Mute button and press a pad simultaneously.

agree!

I tried it with the AR in front of me. I see that when you press Mute or Chromatic mode buttons, the mode appears when you release the button, not when you press it.

In what you describe, the Mute/Chromatic mode would have to appear as soon as you press the button. I tried to think of where this could be a workflow issue, but couldn’t find any reason.

One minor thing is that your hands overlap a bit when holding mute and pressing pads, more than with function+pads. But that’s the only issue I could find.

+1 absolutely brilliant for workflow

If you release the Mute button without pressing any pad, you stay in Mute mode no matter how long you hold it.

The trigger for the “workflow” is not the actual time you hold the Mute mode button, but the fact that you press a pad while still holding it.

I´m working on two simulations for this, one on Lemur, and the other on Launchpad + Max,

Anyone interested?

I don’t have these devices, but a quick video to illustrate the workflow would be great!

You mean a video of the lemur/ipad simulation?

I like the idea being discussed too, stuff like this helps, but the one handed hold muting would not be as natural to press hand-wise

I like the fact that you can exit the perf mode and have a half dim led to signify you have non zeroed pads holding, so pressing/repressing modes might take some programming to feel consistent, but they’ve done a good job so far, i know there are a few colour cues, but i wish the active track was much more visible in all modes

Anyway, good ideas above folks

+1 to the mute workflow improvement
