Best synths for sound design

I want a full modular system maybe a Make Noise Shared System or perhaps one of the new Erica Synths modular setups. Already have bunch of hardware and sound exploration with modular would promise endless fun. I have a blast with my tiny Make Noise 0-coast and hooked up to my Elektrons some crazy tones for days.

What do people think of Micromonsta for sound design?

It’s pretty good, sounds great, lots of features for sound design for the price: wide selection of built-in wavetables plus user wavetables, 3 envelopes with different curves, 3 LFOs with delay and fade, a wide selection of filters, decent mod matrix & “scaler”, good selection of FX. On the downside for me, although the UI is well designed, the small screen means that you have to flip between menus to access all of the params. For me, this means that it’s better to have a pretty good idea of what I want to do before designing a sound, while on the Peak for example I can try stuff out and be more experimental. The MM2 will probably be even better, most likely.

Thanks @spikysimon
I’m trying to hold on to see the MM2 before buying a Blofeld - mostly for the size!
It also has a more “analog” sound to me, than the icy Waldorf.

Waldorf Q rack is my go-to for synth sound design. It’s kind of like the Blofeld, but with more knobs.

Been using the Digitone through the Analog Heat lately and boy oh boy

Korg minilogue xd for the win. If you know C++ you can make your own effects and oscillators for it. The community has already pushed the digi osc into the realms of fm, additive, string, and various other forms of synthesis.

This is really encouraging to hear. Just got a Digitone and have the same feeling you had: that it just sounded very “FM”, in a way for me felt a little flat and am thinking of selling for an A4. But yet again I haven’t spent a ton of time with it

Love my A4 MK2 - so perfect for sound design. I really like the graphical displays for the filters and oscillators.

Great album! Listened often to it back in the days. Didn‘ knew the story!

Don’t sell! Well, do if you really want to, but I encourage you to reconsider. As with any synth you will sometimes feel like you’ve hit a wall. But it’s one of the best and certainly one of the most unique synths out there. Honestly I think it’s the best Elektron product right now.

I’ve found that I have the most fun and am most productive with the Digitone when I set myself a mission with sound design. Like, make a guitar sound or try to create an evolving patch without using the LFOs or whatever. I almost never achieve my mission, but I always end up with something interesting at the end of it.
If you start your sound design process with the Digitone without a mission, it usually ends up sounding a bit "
FM", like if you don’t tell it what to do, it sort of does what it likes. It’s that battle that I find the most rewarding part of using the Digitone.

Well, this is actually what Elektron wanted to achieve, analog machines will sound obviously different.

Again the Iridium is the best granular synth I’ve worked with. You have an incredible amount of control on how you want the playback of the sample to behave yet so intuitive to use. Giving the fact that it’s a three oscillator synth you can imagine what stacking three granular synths could sound like. I sampled stuff off my record player and turned eighties synth pop into evolving deep space soundscapes. Save up it’s worth it.

How are you using the Digitone? Try working with velocity and some lfo to breathe live into the patch. Then p lock a minor hint of difference on each active trig or do trigless trigs as well. Plenty to explore.

Totally - makes sense. I don’t have the right verbiage to describe it honestly

Interested - have you used DT? If so, what major comparisons would you draw from using it for sound design? I tried an A4 yesterday at a local synth shop (safely, that is), and was blown away by the control. My DT knowledge only partially translated over to the A4, but I was able to get some very interesting sounds right off the bat…

Indeed.
Each time I come back to her, my knowledge has progressed and I reach new sounds!

@AdamJay’s Typhon had me wanted to reach these fat sounds, and I am pretty happy where I’ve arrived!

A4 mk2 is such a beautiful beast!
