Best setup A4+AR+Live 9?

Hi. I have had som problems with setting up A4+AR with Live 9.

[li]The Elektron gear, most of the times does not show up in Live. After fiddling turning the gear on and off several times it just works sometimes. Frustrating. Is there a order how the gear should be launched ex. first Live then A4andAR or reverse? Or does it matter?

[li]I have a audiointerface with only two inputs (Focusrite Scarlett 2i4) Which way is best to connect the devices?
Audio AR>A4>Audiointerface + USB-AR>Mac and USB-A4>Mac

[li]What are the correct settings in the Preferences-MIDI in Live (Track-Sync-Remote)?

[li]Are there any known issues playing the A4 with a USB midi keyboard? (That could be related to number 1 in this list. [/li]

Hi

I have the same gear and Live 9 so hopefully I can help.

  1. I don’t have any issue’s in the order I switch things on & off. I can turn on my A4 or RYTM whilst Live is open and then they are available as Midi sources. I’m connecting both via USB but have used Midi and that also works fine too. So to answer point 1, I’m not sure why you’re having a problem here, you shouldn’t be.

  2. How you connect your audio depends really on how you want to record your audio. Sending everything through the A4 (or through the RYTM) will merge all your audio into one. So you won’t be able to edit later if you record all channels at once. Of course, you still can record each part on it’s own and Live will mute all the other parts when you do this. This will free up your other audio channel. But, unless you’re processing the RYTM with the A4’s effects then I would send them in separately myself. You have the inputs after all.

  3. I have Live’s Midi Output set to Track & Remote. Track is the main one for sending Midi to external gear (note on off etc) and Remote will update any external gear’s display (motorised faders, lights on pads etc. In reality, probably Remote doesn’t need to be on). For Input, switch on Track if you want to send data to Live (eg: playing a Drum Rack with the RYTM’s pads). Turn on Sync if you want to slave Live (don’t do this as Live isn’t great when Slaved). I don’t think there’s any need for Remote here—in fact I have all 3 options Off for input.

  4. Not that I know of. I’ve played my A4 with the Push controller no problem.

Hope this helps.
