Hello what is the best video on how to use the fader? I’ve done a beginner course on the OT but it never mentioned how to use the fader. I am really interested in doing a vinyl scratch sound with it. Thank you!
Consider scratching a record…
The record moves back and forth
Therefore your sample also needs to move back and forth in its playback direction
If you set a scene to Rate on the SRC page, with say, Scene A at 64 and Scene B at -63, Scene B is playing the sample backwards and Scene A is playing it forwards.
Move the fader!
Move the fader in a rhythmic way!
Maybe also assign some filter modulation to the same scenes, maybe with some Q resonance set to the high end.
Fuck around and find out…
It is definitely NOT the same as scratching records. That’s a pretty unique experience.
Use flex machine.
I’m sure there are a ton of videos about this with a quick and easy search
The cross fader is a pretty open book.
I’d read up on how to set up scenes in the manual.
Sooo many options.
Check out EZBOT’s videos if you haven’t already - he has some great templates as well as walkthroughs that use the xfader in some really useful ways.
Experimentation
Scene B : RATE -63, PITCH +12
Option with START because you may have silence at the end of the sample, and with negative rate, the sample playback starts from end, you may have silence at the beginning of reverse sample playback.
You can set the AED TRIM to avoid silences.
Trigger the samples in Slot Mode or Slice mode to have several samples.
HOLD = INF, short release, so that the sample is cut when you release the trig (doesn’t work if QUANTIZE TRIG is on).
I added an lfo designer VOL, in order to mimic a real crossfader.
OT crossfader is like the hand on the vinyl.
As was already mentioned: Unlike much things on the OT, setting up and using the fader is really straightforward and intuitive. You learn it best by just trying out stuff - it’s also a nice way to get to know different parameters and ideas that work for you when you start out.
You can then check out EZBOT‘s videos on the topic for some neat ideas, but I would say you should probably first start exploring it by yourself.
There’s a good video by EZBOT teaching Red Means Recording the basics of OT, which is a good beginners tutorial. There’s also a more recent one where he shows Andrew Huang the essentials.
Now go have fun!
