Best bang for your buck for sound variety for sampling?

I have the MC-707 and the quantity and quality of presets are impressive. IIRC the MC-101 should have the same ZEN machine and the same presets. The UI of the MC-101 is quite spartanic and to create user presets might be fiddly, maybe too cumbersome.

If you like the roland sound and the presets go for it. If you want to design your own presets the UI of the MC-101 might not be your best friend. The MC-707 is more expensive, but IMO this UI works fine for musical ideas and sound design.

This is a decent starting point for free;

EDIT: go to the last page and work backwards… this thread started in 2009, so the format quality has gotten better over time, so, higher rez samples are more recent.

If you really want to go down a rabbit-hole, there’s this: Loads of 90s sample CDs, ripped.

haha I’ve gotten some of these and they are pretty fun. The entire download is huge so I’ve been selective in what I get.

Does it even exist anymore? I can’t find anything less than $10.

Free for noncommercial use…

Yes, there are tons of free or cheap synth apps, even garage band has tons of free content you can use for sampling and mangling.

And if you have ipad or iphone with usb-c you just need one cable to connect everything up.

I do have an iPad with USB-C so perhaps I should look at utilizing that more. Any recommendations for apps that might have a wide range of accessible sounds without needing much tinkering?

Definitely check the iPad iOS apps thread. It has tons of great apps mentioned

What’s the cable for USB C iPhones called ? Is it still the CCK cable ?

I want to sample on Spotify again

You can check the apps by audiokit pro for example. Basically Romplers with tons of Presets, I think the „king of FM“ is free. And as mentioned the tons of packs for garage band. These could get you started for free.

you should be able to use a regular usb-ccable and use the sp as a sound interface like on the computer, but I am still on an old iphone SE so I can‘t check.

Micromonsta 2, if you can get a hold of one. Otherwise a Microfreak.

Had a microfreak and did not like it at all, ended up selling it. It also didn’t have a ton of presets compared to what it sounds like the MC-101 and Seqtraq have.

I loved the MF-interface and it really shines with external fx. But the MM2 is really a brilliant gem. I use it with my Digitakt II all the time for instrumental parts, basses/leads/pads, you name it.

Tried multiple Roland boxes, but the interfaces really aren’t made for my brains. Endless menu diving.

MC-101 is fiddly for sequencing etc. but if you just want to select and play preset sounds to sample them it is very easy really. Same for the Seqtrak.

Check out the AudioKit apps on iOS such as Synth 1, D1, VHS Synth, etc. top notch apps and I think many are free, or they were upon release.
