Thanks for the insight! Very nice to get some from an actual resident of the country. Hoping I can still make the trip one day. Germany is on my list for sure, but travel restrictions in general are deterring me from any international travel at the moment. I’m sure I’d love both, but Berlin sounds more my speed as an east coaster born in NYC.
Out of the world I have seen, Berlin feels like my spiritual home. You will love it there! Such a ‘vibe’ for creative types and there seems to be a feeling of personal accountability and responsibility, which I found refreshing.
hey man, to work in Germany – provided you have the right paperwork to do so – you need a tax ID and a place where you conduct your work. You don’t need a home address for that.
Given that you’ve worked in Munich already, you will already have a German Tax ID. I take it you want to work self-employed, in that case you can just rent a desk/mailbox at a co-working space (will cost you anywhere from 120-300€ a month) and then go to the tax authorities and let them know that you will start working as a freelancer – then give them the address of the co-working space you have your desk in (make sure the co-working space of your choice offers mail service, i.e. that you can receive mail at that address) and you’re good to go.
The tax authorities will either allow you to do your work via your regular tax id or they might send you a new one for your freelance activity (in case they deem you to be an “Einzelunternehmen”) – either case you can start right away, again provided you have a valid work permit of course.
I’ll add that this is not legal advice just an attempt to contribute to your questions and I suggest that you double check all the information you get in here. You do not want to mess up with the German bureaucracy, it’s not fun lol
the only bad reputation Munich has is that it is super snobby, a little bit too deep in the local patriotism and actually more of a village than a city (“das größte Dorf der Welt”) – it’s literally one of the wealthiest and safest cities in Germany, enjoy your trip.
Especially in 2022 and the world steeped in various online-organized astroturfing movements (or worse), flag-waving can make anyone uncomfortable.
I will get tax id!
After many hostels, I found one but it’s in Zeitz (small town) near Leipzig, so I’ll live in Zeitz for 1-3 months and after that move back to Berlin.
Hey, sadly but I don’t have, because of Lithuanian contract. (I asked in Finanzamt Mitte/Tiergarten)
Thank you all Elektronauts!
Things getting better, step by step.
Let’s keep this discussion open for all in similar situation.
And I want to share a track what resonated with me alot at days in Berlin.
Man, I have several friends who moved to Berlin in the last few years. I’ve been a couple times, seems like at the time it was very cheap to stay their with US money but maybe also difficult to get a job that paid very much.
I have a lot of respect and envy for anyone who lives in a big city. But I also think I make pretty good music and am happy to live in suburbia as a Lone Ranger carpenter and unlicensed electrician.
This is amazing
Hello dear Elektroauts… I m wondering if some here is from Berlin.
Will be nice to be in contact and maybe do some music togheter… Some up for techno, hardtekno or rap beat?
Cheers
Mod edit: there you go
Hi there. I’ll be in Berlin on June 21st during Fête de la Musique. Could any locals offer some recommendations on this day or in general?
Much appreciated. This would be my first time visiting Berlin. Regarding music, I’m into classic 90s hiphop, Detroit house a la Moodymann, downtempo, jazz fusion, etc. I’m not into hard hitting techno and I realize that’s very prevalent in Berlin. I’m staying in Prenzlauer Berg and I figure I’ll head down to Neukölln and see what’s going on.
