…in the first years i did use the master track option…
but always got lost in the decision if i use it for some final overal compression with some final overall eq’ing…or if i wanna do the overall freeze delay trick combined with some overall filtering…hmmmmm…both nice to have…but u can only have one or the other combo in a sonic meaningful way…
u might find other arguments how to treat all ur track machines at once though, but end of the day, it’s nothing but that…some final “neighbour” track for all u got to simply treat at once…
so at some point i realised, freeze delays are huge impact effects, but ware out pretty fast, since u almost can’t avoid to overdo them, once placed on ur mastertrack…so such setting’s better be used on individual trax…
and since ot’s overall fx quality is great for all kinds of mangeling and moving it, it’s compressor and eq capabilties are not top notch enough to work out real master duties…
at least compared to modern day standards…
so, if u ask me…take care of solid gainstaging and proper eq’ing all along the way of creation, in all it’s single places and use track 8 for whatever else u want and for the better…
all the real master track magic can happen, once u run ur ot through an analog heat…
I’m using compressor and a touch of verb on the master track every time. It helps a lot. I think it’s especially good when using live inputs that might be a little unpredictable.
It makes it one of the few boxes out there that gives you a p-lockable master compressor. And that’s about as good as drawing master dynamics automation in a DAW. But it’s hardware.
not to derail the thread but what do you think of the Boum in the way you use it? Was also thinking to get one for the same purpose but I understand T8 as master is still very useful anyway - it’s not as if the Boum will make it redundant - or could?
TBH I’ve not had/made a chance to explore it properly since I bought the Boum (almost a month ago).
In my only test to check it actually worked and didn’t need returning, it seemed a bit more distorted than I hoped, even at the lowest setting, but
a) I maybe just need to compare it with recordings I like
b) I understand the input level works to control the distortion tone a bit, and I didn’t play with that at all
c) I didn’t touch the compressor
The filter’s perfect for “fills” and “build ups” tho’.
