Plastic.
Yeah, that’s pretty much the point of this thing. Hooked it up to my apollo and went crazy with compressor and channel strip plugins.
Want it? I think I’m going to send it back.

You gonna get a TR8S or yocto instead?
Why would you send it back if it sounds great? If you’re going to send it back and get your full return I assume you’d want full price, and I’d just buy new at that point, appreciate the offer though for sure!
what, @t you have one for sale?
PM pls! I bought a surface 3 from you a few years ago so you know I’m a solid buyer
Owned a TR-8S. They’re excellent even though editing kits is a bit of a hassle.
I’ve already got a TR-08 as well as a Cyclone Analogic’s 606 and CR-78 clones so I am well covered.
I might build a Yocto at some point in the future if I feel like soldering again.
I was expecting it to be smaller. I also wanted to whether I would enjoy using it more than the TR-08, but that wasn’t really the case. The individual outputs sure are convenient, but weren’t enough to justify keeping it.
I love the tr-08 but sometimes it feels a little cumbersome to work with live. Some of the features on the rd-8 would be really convenient to have. But it’s just so huge! I love how small the tr-08 is!
A neat comparison of the RD8 and Tr08. Somehow the preview to this video doesn’t work on this forum.
Is the Sound of the 808 in tr-08 and tr8s identical? A friend of mine, who owns a tr-08 tested recently the tr8s and he swears, that the tr-08 sounds better … shouldnt it be the same?
It really depends on your want/needs. I just think it’s cool to have a classic analog drummachine with multiple outs. Sure there are some things here and there that can be better, but what do you expect for 300 euro’s. What matters is the sounds, and that’s pretty much ace to me.
Personally I kind of like that it’s huge and all, it’s a here I am, deal with it vibe. I never worked with the OG but it seems that the RD is as close as I’m ever going to get to it.
To me, it sounds the same.
They have not said specifically. There are two default 808 kits in the TR-8S, I work on the assumption that one is the original TR-8 model and the second is an updated one.
It’s possible that the converters in the TR-8S are simply of higher quality than the ones in the boutique, but I’ve not had a TR-08 to do a direct comparison.
Just got a shipping notice for my preorder! I should get mine by early next week at the latest. Too bad the new firmware isnt out yet, but I guess I can hang in there until the sequencer bugs get fixed.
I was thinking of using my OT for sequencing the RD-8, but that will have to wait (the kickdrum cannot be trigged by MIDI because of a firmware bug).
Can’t wait to hear how the RD-8 will sound running through my outboard
Was thinking 1073 DI into pultec into SA4000, oughta sound tasty
Ok, the RD-8 just got home. I gotta say that soundwise I’m not 100% content, but other than that this box is quite fun to mess around with! And maybe extra processing will help too, cant test that right now…
What the RD-8 needs IMHO is the ability to tweak the sounds under the hood. If the upcoming mods make this easy, this thing will be badass! Right now, the default voicing seems off for the kick, the pitch sweep doesnt feel right and the click of the BD is also maybe off? And the decays of the hihats feel off too, not short enough for 32rd note rolls I feel. Clave doesn’t sound at all like the 808, as initial demos already confirmed. Not sure yet if the accent behaviour is spot on, need to get used to it again (only 21 years since I messed with an og 808 LOL)
The note repeats and the seq repeats are kinda cool, I just wish we could set the timing values ourselves.
First footwork workout of 10 mins in and I’m already hooked on the wave designer + filter
EDIT: wtf, no negative shuffle amt? Bummer. Why some many makers sleep on this? In this regard the TR-08 is better, as it has neg. shuffle
EDIT2: trig dropout bug after 256 steps confirmed, the firmware fix supposedly drops this week
EDIT3: Just tested external sequencing with my MPC live, seems to be working just fine! Also realized I can resample with the MPC so made a hasty “demo”, its all RD-8 with some ill judged processing & fx from the MPC
Next step will be pairing the RD-8 with OT MIDI tracks
TL;DR - kick pitch mod & hh decay mod aside, this is a decent BOB clone for the money. lets MAKE ANOTHER TRACK
behringer RD808 sounds really good. Ill be buying one for sure dont care of it dosnt sound just like a 808. It seems pretty close and as long as it just sounds good!
That live jam sounds great.
I’m in the same boat. At some point it’s ‘good enough’ and no machine is perfect. We’re always chasing something we can never catch and for that matter we’re really not quite sure what it is as the ambitions and moods are always changing.
