The problem with data warehouses/aggregators is that you can’t opt out of their effects on your life. You don’t choose to opt-in, you don’t accept anything to have your life-profile shared with them.

I’m happy that as of yet so far nobody’s suggested using a write-once, read-only public ledger for “privacy” of transactions. For the most part**, nobody’s actively mining your credit card transactions for who you transact with and what you buy, governments leave that diligence to bank onboarding.

That onboarding process isn’t great and TOS can be weird, but it’s mostly structured around making sure vague terms of service are upheld.

**Getting into the specifics of southern US and law enforcement is absolutely something beyond the scope of this topic but it’s also something that crypto does not solve, KYC at entry and exit points is a treasure trove of identifying data and every single transaction with chain analysis makes it a “solution” in search of a real world problem.

imo VPN services are sold on either FUD, or folks wanting to circumvent regional controls for streaming services. If you still accept cookies everywhere and use social media, all you’re doing is putting your online fingerprint through a VPN.

If you’re bothered about commercial tracking, duckduckgo search/browser are a good start.

Especially these days where companies build entire profiles around users based on some impressive subtleties in how you move around online.

Anonymising data is famously difficult because of how it can be cross-correlated - which is also why you should be vary weary when governments and companies talk about sharing your data in such a way. It doesn’t take much to combine two pieces of anon data to ID someone.

I find it alarming how easily people submit to mechanisms which exert control over them, without so much as a second thought.

But these things are always faded in, a good example is cell phones - started off as a means of mobile communication, now they are much more than that, incremental features added, cameras, navigation, email, social media, payments, health, etc - all for convenience of the user. Oh, thats ok then.
