Beatstep pro and model cyles help needed

hi. i have a secondhand cycles, which arrived with only 1 mini midi jack to din. i have a beatstep pro sequencing my synths so i’d like the cycles to be the master and sync the beatstep pro sequences (i’n not interested in beatstep pro controlling cycles). so would you agree it would make sense that cycles is the master clock and it goes into midi clock in on beatstep ?

also wanted to ask would a mini midi jack to din conversion cable that works with a beatstep pro work with the model:cyles ? or do they need two different types of mini midi to din ?

as i’m trying to work out if the cable is the issue or the cycles has a issue with midi outputs either physically or assignment wise

i’ve watched this video

thanks in advance for any tips!

Setting cycles to send midi clock and transport: yes
Cycles: midi out
Beatstep: midi in

Arturia products use type B trs midi, and I think models can use either type (a or b). So if your cable is type A then it’s fine for the cycles but the beatstep won’t get the signal. I’d probably start there.

You can also just plug a regular 3.5 stereo cable to “patch” the M:C to the Arturia, no need for dongles or MIDI DIN5 cables:

thanks for your knowledge and reply, i didn’t know that about the cpacity to use a 3.5 stereo cable carrying midi data.i’ve had a go this morning with one such cable running the midi out from the cycles into both midi clock in and midi in on beatstep and when beatstep in midi or clock mode the beatstep is still not clocking to the cycles transport. poked about in the midi control centre app for the beatstep and nothing obvious to my eyes i’m missing.

Try inverting the polarity of the M:C MIDI output:

:wrench: Config Menu > MIDI > Ports > Out Pol.

Wait, I’ve missed this… There’s only one MIDI input on the Beatstep Pro. The clock input is for analog clock pulses, you don’t wanna use it in this scenario.

thanks so much to all for your help, think your advice sorted it! i have a midi keyboard which i want to play notes into the beatstep pro, so now have the issue of how to try and make that happen as the midi in is now receiving midi out of cycles but at least i know sync works now

i tried to switch cycles to midi thru and see if notes played in via a midi cable would go thru cycles into the midi of the beatstep but this didnt work but could have been a dud cable things so i’ll by a few new and see what comes together

This should work if you enable MIDI thru on the Model, but I would use a channel (on the keyboard) that isn’t assigned to any of the M:C tracks (1-6), FX or auto channel. I’m not sure what the defaults were for FX and Auto, I reassigned them at some point. You can look it up in the Config Menu, MIDI, In Chan.

You also have to select the matching input channel(s) on the Beatstep Pro. Select the Sequencer (1, 2 or DRUM), then hold SHIFT + CHAN and push the step corresponding to the keyboard channel number. Make use of three different channels here and switch between them on the keyboard to access the sequencer lanes.

thanks for the tips - got it working now - albeit sometimes the beatstep pro is a bit inconsitent in performance but thanks agin fro your help in problem solving!
