If the M-Audio controller ever kicks it, I hope he makes a tribute video. I was so surprised and disgusted the first time I saw those yellowed keys, but it’s become a character in its own right.
You’re right, it’s probably inaccurate to call it a “problem” when he obviously enjoys it and has a lot of fun (unless we find out his Elektronauts user name and identify him as a frequent user confessing he failed in the NGNY and downsizing thread
). I don’t exactly see the point in having three TB-03 around, things that he not once used or rates F when all the space dedicated for gis gear is occupied to the point where it’s stacked on that IKEA shelf, but if he enjoys that, power to him!
I can think of a few reasons. For example, some of us just don’t have that anxiety, that pressure that it seems you must feel to get rid of stuff. But wait until when and how it’s convenient to do so. And sometimes, that just takes a long time to get around to.
Is him having a bunch of weird old gear that sucks to use and/or sounds bad but has some redeeming quality somehow worse than people who don’t have a monetized YouTube channel to showcase said bad gear but own every stupid TE product?
I own a bunch of mid at best fx pedals and even some good ones that get no use but at some point it made sense to buy it and selling it hasn’t been necessary. I’m sure a lot of people here have similar situations with synths and samplers and midi controllers and fx. His hoard of stuff is quirky but not particularly strange to me tbh.
Does sentimental value count as historic (microhistoric maybe) interest? I own plenty of gear I could’ve sold or otherwise gotten rid of, but carries some personal meaning to me.
Watching the episode with various lower rated equipment made me think it should be renamed ‘Sad Gear’
Sure. Having had the same house for a couple of decades and then downsizing, I know exactly what you mean. I just figured there’s less space in a Viennese apartment than a Canadian 4br detached.
I didn’t consider it some sort of terrible character defect. Just a bit surprising.
Absolutely. I’m too new to gear to have this, but I definitely struggle with this with books, even after repeated downsizing.
He features the TB-3 in almost every video he does, and he’s occasionally used two at the same time. Given they are both cheap and discontinued, keeping a third one is not that crazy in his case.
When he did the TR-8S episode he paired it with all three TB3’s if I’m not misremembering, and specifically said “I have been waiting for this opportunity for a long time” right before the jam. As someone who has multiple metal zone pedals, I get it. The things aren’t that expensive and don’t take up a lot of room and if it really is your favorite utility synth as he claims, it’s not super weird to grab one whenever they pop up for cheap. After he got the second one he probably got the third one just to lean into the gag a little, but for his style of music he might really just use three of them live sometimes.
Alright, you’ve all convinced me that my comments are nonsense ![]()
. Florian, whoever you are on here, I’m sorry! We now know how to spot you if you ever post in the setups thread
.
We should probably have a thread where people just show off their piles of gear they haven’t used in a long time but haven’t sold. Probably would see some pretty epic stuff that people on here are just keeping in a dusty corner of their bedroom or garage.
I have some gear I don’t use, selling it is just a pain
I think there’s a thread for it. Let me check…
Here it is:
I was just surprised to learn that the A4 hasn’t gotten the Bad Gear treatment yet. He needs to complete the Trinity. I can think of plenty of boxes that it ticks (regardless of how much I love mine).
I’m with you.
In fact, I try to sell a bunch of items at once. Put them up on reverb.com or Reddit’s synth4sale on a Friday morning or afternoon. At low enough prices, so I can hopefully sell them all by the end of the weekend. Pack them all up at once. Take them all to the post office at once on Monday. And have it done with.
He did do an episode about the Analog Keys so I feel like he’s covered it. I was actually a bit surprised to see he has an A4 rather than a Digitone among his personal collection.
I was sort of surprised there was no Rytm in there but I know he’s said he really hates the pads.
Very much enjoying the OsTIrus emulator…
