I’m trying to chromatically play samples on my Octatrack’s Audio tracks using my Analog Rytm’s chromatic keyboard. This works flawlessly already for MIDI tracks, however not for Audio tracks. At some point this did work, but only for the chromatic notes in the “yellow” range on the Rytm’s chromatic keyboard (highest octave on the Rytm)). However after restarting the devices, this stopped working altogether, although the settings haven’t changed (I checked).
I suppose this could be due to the fact that the highest MIDI note the Rytm seems to be able to send is C5, whereas according to the Octa manual the MIDI notes required to chromatically play samples on the Octatrack (“TRACK SAMPLE PITCH”) are only starting at C5 and go upwards from there, where the RYTM can’t reach them. Then however I wonder how the Chromatic Play has previously (and seemingly randomly) worked for the “yellow” note range, as described above.
Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thank you and have a great weekend everyone!
Device Settings I’ve used
On Rytm:
Using TRK 12 to send MIDI to Octa
TRK 12 SEND MIDI is active
In CHANNELS settings, TRACK 12 CHANNEL is set to 12
On Octa:
AUTO CHANNEL is set to 12
MIDI CONTROL:
– AUDIO CC IN is on
– AUDIO NOTE IN tried STANDARD, FOLLOW TM and MAP TRACK
To set the AUDIO TRACKS on Octatrack to react to MIDI, you have to press MIDI + up or down arrow to select the MIDI note input method for AUDIO TRACKS. Here you can select CHROMATIC, SLOT or SLICE, etc. Note, that using FUNC up and down sets the Trig Mode method which will only react to the trigs on OCTA. (The one you mentioned in your post is the Standard Mode which is the default setting, you want the Chromatic Mode)
In the settings for AUDIO NOTE IN, FOLLOW TM = every AUDIO TRACK will follow the same input method for both physical and incoming midi. MAP TRACK will distinguish OCTA’s physic trig with incoming MIDI NOTEs, where every track can be set to have its own method for MIDI input (only) on the Audio Tracks.
SLOTS starts from C - 1 , 127 slots, SLICE starts from C 0 . max 64 slices. So make sure RYTM is sending the correct note. AFAIK, Rytm only has 2 octaves so you might not be able to cover the whole range of Slots.
Hope this helps! Let me know if I got something wrong.
By default, they do react to midi.
But there are interesting options you mentionned.
The problem is the note range indeed. And C5 is C4 for OT*, so you simply can’t play OT’s C5-C7 notes for chromatic playback, because AR highest note** is below that range.
I’d prepare 48 slices samples, and use FOLLOW TM or MAP TRACK with SLICE. The range should correspond, 4 octaves.
Even better.
*Note 0 is C-1 for OT, C0 for AR.
**On AR pads I think highest note is B4, C5 is the highest note AR can receive.
Guys, thank you again for your contributions - deeply appreciated <3.
Based on your help and with some fiddeling, I have now managed to get this to work. To solve the note range issue, I have inserted a simple MIDI Router between AR and OT, adding +2 Octaves on every note coming into OT’s Auto Channel from AR.
