Sorry about the mess it’s still in the planning stage lol
That’s a tight squeeze for that amount of gear!
I’d be planning to build some bass trapping before doing anything else tbh!
And yes, I’d definitely recommend downsizing given the apparent space. Don’t have to sell stuff (just box some up and store it) but you’re really gonna struggle to fit all that gear into that space in a nice ergonomic way imho.
But the small space is also good cos cable runs won’t be as long → smaller cable spend required.
Thanks
I’ve got an Allen & Heath 32 channel GS3 analogue mixer which I’m planning to mount vertically on a wall to save space.
I want to use it for mixdowns/analogue summing but don’t have the cash to expand my SQ5 with a stage box to interface with it yet.
If you want to use your Midas mixer for mixdowns/analogue summing, then go for it- wall mounting might be a smart move to save space if you plan on keeping it.
But if it’s just another device through which your audio passes on the way to your DAW, I’d probably sell it to save space and config headache (and cable spend and patchbay space…) and just patch/normal your sound sources to your Motus, straight into your DAW.
I was actually thinking that myself selling the Midas and patch/normal the sound sources into the Motus, straight into your DAW
Oh those motus have adat expansion options too… So you could add some adat converters, get a huge total IO count and have everything direct into your interfaces then use CueMix as your patchbay… Might work really well!
Not sure if there’s a limit on the number of channels you can send via firewire… 4 fully adat expanded 828s sounds like a lot of channels to fit into that bandwidth
.
2 of the motus are hybrids so have firewire and Usb
If it was me setting up that gear in that room, I think I would approach it something like this. I haven’t considered the exact number of inputs and outputs you have or anything like that.
Mackie 1604s as sub mixers at the halfway point of the shelves on each side of the room. Gear you don’t want to run through the mackies goes at the Midas end, gear you’re happy to take as a submix goes at the far end.
Patchbays on each side in the corners near the Midas/computer.
Patchbays will have the mackie sub mixes and the gear that’s closest patched in.
Sources at the patchbay are then normalled to the Midas.
Midas group outs or whatever it has then go back to patchbays in rack normalled to the Motu interfaces.
So when you want to record you can choose to take either the mixer outs by default into the Motus, or skip the mixer and manually patch a synth directly to the Motu.

You’ve got a lot of duplicates going on; I think my first move would to be write a list of the sonic roles I need to cover (bass mono, drum machine, sampler, poly synth, etc), then work those into a core setup.
Then I’d leave space for ‘guest devices’ and bring things in as needed.
