Hi all.
I’ve just finished a full rework of the studio. I fired the new setup up and ran into an issue I’ve not experienced before? I’ve had the RNC 10 or so years performing sidechain duties though I had the sidechain socket routed to the rear of a patchbay so I’d just plug whatever in and good to go.
The new setup only requires an Alphabase kick as the key/sc signal so my initial setup was just a hosa black breakout from Alphabase kick sending one signal to the RNC sc and the other fed down into “L & “R” Oto boum inputs. L&R as I have other Alphabase parts stereo processed before Oto boum so I aim to have the kick in there too.
The problem arose that somehow either left or right kick signals weren’t identical at the boum.
To try remedy this I must have tried 15-20 different ways with all sorts of different configurations?
I am left to believe I had this working on my old big soundcraft by using a fx send in a sub group that I muted? I may have done it differently but it seems logical I may have?
As I’ve discovered by breaking out a small mixer I had in a draw (reluctantly… it’s nasty) no mater which way I try to split the signal I wind up with the RNC’s input being returned to the mixer. The mixer has a dedicated send & return, control room out, phones out & mains? No matter how I try to configure this I either disrupt the kicks stereo amplitudes or have the RNC input fed back and sent out the main along with the kick? As you can tell neither of these are desirable settings for my intended result.
Im not sure how im going to achieve this without a submit I can mute?
I still have a patchbay available.
Can anyone make a suggestion to my aid?
Thank you all kindly.
There’s a lot of dense info here. I’m struggling to follow it.
Can you describe the audio effect you’re trying to achieve? Tell us in terms of signals and groups, and mix outcomes, bot about bits of gear or cables, for now.
E.g.
“I want to mix a drum group and pads group separately, using the kick to duck the pads group”.
Running bass through RNC
Running kick through Oto boum
Both continue on to their own “individual” mixer channels.
The outcome desired is no cross talk on eithers individual channel
I’m getting the bass signal fed back to the Origen of the kick via the sidechain?
I definitely have other ways to get the desired effect but Id like to just mult the kick into the sc and get on with it.
The RNC forwards the signal received at its inputs out through the tip connector of the side-chain socket. The intention is to pass that through some eq, and back into the ring connection of the side-chain, filtering out frequencies you don’t want to trigger the compressor.
The Boum side chain input is just a key in (IIRC).
So, if all you want is a kick to trigger the compressor (ignoring the filtering/eq option), you need to ensure it just goes into the ring, and that you’re not unintentionally bringing the signal from the tip into your mix (which would happen if you’re connecting the side-chain to a standard mixer insert).
Also, the RNC’s main inputs are weird. They also have a send&return feature but it’s the other way around from the side chain: the tip takes the input signal, the ring outputs the final compressed signal. If you’re using the RNC as an insert effect, you can use TRS jacks between the desk insert points (which I/o the other way around) and the compressor, and get a compressed signal back into the mixer. If you’re using the RNC after the mixer, or on an Aux (or between an instrument and a mixer), you have to use TS jacks.
