Arturia Polybrute (All Models)

I sold my Iridium keyboard to make room for a Polybrute 12.

Didn’t really gel with the Iridium, took too much effort to make it sound great and the UI didn’t inspire me. Also, I think the distortion options didn’t sound very good.

I think the Polybrute 12 is what I hoped the Iridium keyboard would be for me. Hopefully I made the right choice

Lovely film from Arturia with Donato Dozzy at home with the PolyBrute 12. Dozzy is such a legend!

It sounds really really good (i have one and like it a lot) but i must admit i was in shock the first time i was playing with mine. I absolutely didnt like the presets at all and it gave me a bad first impression tbo. Once i started programming the Polybrute i was just mind blowed, it can sounds very 70 (think
old Yamaha CS and Korg m500 etc ).

@Drive_In_Theater
I also have exactly the same problem with mine with the Steiner filter when cutoff is low, only on voice 2. I have just returned mine and should have some news soon so i will let you know.
It sounds like vinyl crackle noise :

New Polybrute 12 user here

I’m trying to setup the Polybrute Connect in Ableton, but I’m having troubles with the MPE settings.

I can’t find a way to control the Polybrute in split/layer mode and play it from Ableton just like on the Polybrute keybed. It seems that it always plays either layer A or B, but not both. So when I play notes in Ableton below the split point, it should play the lower part, above the split point the upper part. In layer mode, it should play both simultaneously.

What settings should I use? The support section of Arturia is a bit vague about this…

Both are the Polybrute

I feel the same way. For a modern synth, it’s got a 70s vibe, but you wouldn’t know that from the presets. Can’t help you with the crackle tho.

I found the Delay feature of the Mod envelope doesn’t have any effect. Seems like a bug, can someone confirm?

=edit=

hmm after a reboot, it works as expected… Weird

I’m trying to create a trance gate effect on my Polybrute, but when I program the filter output level in the sequencer, its movement is slewed, so you don’t get those stutter effect.

Does anyone know a good way to create a trance gate effect? Of course, you could just use square LFO and then modulate the rate of the LFO by another LFO, but this is rather cumbersome. I hope someone knows an easier way?

Does anyone have a good explanation as to why a three-and-a-half thousand buck synthesizer uses unbalanced outputs? It’s just such a weird design choice for me that I can’t wrap my head around that. My 100€ Behringer Rackmix uses all balanced Ins and I can’t believe that electronically balanced outputs are that much more expensive.

Any thoughts?

You should probably ask Arturia directly if you’re interested in a non “speculative only” answer…

The osmose uses pseudo balanced to cut corners at the cost of a few db to have something which is hardly noticiable…I would have prefered to keep the lost db.

Except if you have really long cables and use very low volume, you’ll probably won’t notice a difference but hey, some people on audiophile forums find that the orientation in which you plug your cables matters a lot…So…

Obviously no one here would be able to say definitely - asking Arturia would most likely only result in an answer which sounds like media training…

If they use actual balanced outputs (not just impedance matching) there shouldn’t be any drop in volume or the like. There may very well be quite a lot of people who wouldn’t care about balanced outs - I swear by it. May be that I am wrong.

It just feels like so out of place for a clearly professionally costed device - like buying a Jeep without a hitch. Sure, many people will not use it, but I would kind of expect such a car to have that feature and retrofitting is just always a hassle.

If it were a sub 1k synth? Whatever. On your flagship model though?

Most synths/manufacturers use unbalanced.

What length cables are you using with your PB?

Elektron uses (impedance) balanced outs

I do not own a PB (yet?), as it is quite a steep price for something which is just a hobby. Maybe some day…

My cable lengths are all between 1 and 3 meters, but with them going into the patchbay and out, into FX etc. there is quite a jumble of cables and in my experience my noise level is considerably lower than it used to be.

This could 100% be just placebo though

That’s why we love them :kissing_heart:

I have 5m cables running from my PB12 to my mixer. No issues.

Some other flagship synths for reference:

  • Groove Synthesis 3rd Wave – unbalanced
  • Nord Stage 4 – unbalanced
  • Waldorf Quantum Mk2 – unbalanced
  • Oberheim OB-X8 – unbalanced

In general, my preference would also be to have balanced outputs but clearly some of the heavy hitters in the synth industry don’t think that’s a critical feature of good synth design.

What would you need balanced outputs for on the Polybrute? Are you planning on extremely long cable runs or live right next to a cell tower?
If you’re gigging with the PB (with that weight, I don’t know why you would) and the mixer is a million miles away, use a passive DI. If the venue has a mixer, they most likely have some DI boxes around as well.

As others have pointed out, there are very few synthesizers (the knobby kind) with balanced outputs on the market. I think the only high-end synthesizer that has balanced outputs is the Nonlinearlabs C15 which is aimed at performing musicians.

Generally speaking you will find balanced outputs on

  • stage keyboards (that aren’t Nord),
  • workstation keyboards,
  • synthesizers or other keyboards with an input for external audio (which can be routed to the main outs), and
  • the Access Virus (relatively freshly off the market)

I doubt that you will experience any issue with those cable lengths and depending on the type, many FX units will be unbalanced as well. I do like a balanced output though and I really appreciate when a synth uses XLR for output! Looking at you Korg Odyssey :kissing_heart:

Are you using TRS patchbays?

I feel like people are a little bit ignoring that I stated that it is more of a pet peeve than actual concerns about audio quality in normal home studio settings.

I can however appreciate that a lot of gear, including high priced or flagship modells, in fact use unbalanced audio and it is not a big concern in a home studio set up. Maybe it was just me trying to be super safe going with almost all balanced - I usually try to ignore all the HiFi Fluff people throw around. Shouldn’t hurt to use balanced connections with balanced gear anyways and who knows, maybe I will tour with super long cables?

This all probably derailed the thread from being about the Polybrute, so let me ask this

For who has the Polybrute 12, how happy are you overall with it? I’d be especially curious how you’d rate the “MPE” and if you use it often

Cheers
