Arturia Minifreak

My findings while using the MPC 1000:

  1. There’s a small amount of delay (about 1 bar @ 120.0 bpm)

  2. https://www.mpc-forums.com/viewtopic.php?p=49314#:~:text=You%20can%20manually,for%20the%20track. (The change was instant)

I won’t even consider buying this until the Noir version is released. They should just release the Noirs straight out the gate imo.

dear forum,

can someone tell me what “Mod 3:8” in the matrix stands for? in this patch the parameter is assigned to wheel. I can’t figure out what “Mod x:y” destinations are doing.

thank you!

mod matrix, third row eighth collumn?

Wheel controlls mod 3:8, which in itself controlls lfo1 to vca, ergo wheel controills the amount of lfo1 to vca.

Beware, reload is almost instantaneous but, will cut fx, release tails and held notes !

How is the MiniFreak output level, compared to MicroFreak?

I couldn’t use the MicroFreak with my Model 1.4 mixer even with mixer gain at max. Other synths are fine, plenty of output.

any long time reports? how happy are u with your Minifreak.

Thinking about buying one

Got mine last November (1st synth => great decision) and still loving it.

Very versatile. Steep learning curve but the UI is great once you grok it. I had the hardest time understanding the mod matrix (I was a slow child) but it really makes the unit for me. I like the keybed and also frequently midi in with bigger controllers (mostly for LH bass).

Synth is really nice, I like the sound very much, lot’s of controls, performance features etc…

All this sounds can probably be built elsewhere in ( several others ) vst but the form factor, the hands on control and the price makes it it hard to beat.

Sequencer and arp are very well thought imho !

The vst is a nice addition to build complex patches.

Only downside to me is the filter.
Clearly on the meh side despite being labelled “analog”, it’s just so neutral that it doesn’t bring much to the table. I consider it as a “utility” module.

Arturia has a good reputation of adding stuff regularly to their freaks, so…

Recommended as first synth, sound source, performance synth !

Have you tried the OSC2 filters? (Surgeon, comb and multi)

I think the digital filters sound better than the analog one. I agree, it’s an extremely boring filter. What’s on the Digitakt and Digitone and other digital synths like Micromonsta 2 are all far more interesting filters and they are digital. It’s almost not even worth mentioning and it shouldn’t be a selling point for anyone interested in the synth. It’s not like the Novation Peak where it’s a largely digital synth but the analog filter definitely brings a lot to the table.

agree completely. I use the surgeon and comb a lot and still love twisting the analog knob on my MiniFreak!

So no reports on the out level question, compared to the MicroFreak or even other synths?

To be fair there is not much competition, the closest comparison would be Hydrasynth, and since Arturia said that Microfreak features will come to Minifreak at some point, it is probably the best bang for the buck synth atm. I’m grabbing mine when the update will come. Pigments lite in hardware form, what’s not to like. I’ve visited lots of forums about this synth and so far haven’t found any complains regarding build quality.

I’d like to know as well (it was mainly the only complaint I had on my MicroFreak)

I’ve had both the Mini- and MicroFreak. It’s some time ago, but I’m 95% sure the low output has been fixed on the MiniFreak.

Copied this reply from reddit topic on the microfreak, maybe it’ll help you out:

In the preset menu the Output is often set to - 12db. You can change it there. Hope this helps!

yes, you are right, now I understand, thank you

I agree. Minifreak is a great synth but the filter lacks of soul especially compared to the Dreadbox Typhon I had.
