That’s when quoting comes in handy. I had no idea about the Korg; it’s still relatively new I guess. I wonder how the keys and DACs compare between the two.
Ok this baby straight into OT is an excellent experience so far! The astrolab leans towards the brighter hyped side for my ears (not that much though-and can be easily tamed with the onboard eq). But since the OT sound quality sucks so bad, its a perfect combo for me!

The Sensel Morph is 24 x 17 cm, battery operated, with Bluetooth MIDI, so no wires, and thin as it gets. You could do a custom overlay with exactly the controls you need. No feedback on actual settings though.
Keep thinking.
I wonder how the keys and DACs compare between the two
Can’t speak to the DAC as that’s not something I’ve ever used. As for the keys, I know it’s subjective, but they’re my favorite, beating out the numerous Fatar 9/S keybeds, and the Arturia premium keybed (top controllers, Polybrute) which would have been my preference in roughly that order.
I’ve heard others say it’s awful? So I suppose it’s a very subjective thing. It is apparently similar - if not literally identical - to the keybed on the Hydrasynth Deluxe, so if you have experience with that, it should be in the same ballpark.
In short: MIDI 2.0 doesn’t really work yet, I’m not actually thrilled with poly aftertouch, and I don’t use the DAC.
Still my favorite keyboard.
This is not the keyboard I am currently seeking, but definitely the platform I will want in the near future.
When they will make it 49 keys with a proper larger display and enough knob/buttons to make some sound design and have a good dedicated workflow, I’m in
A Moog, P5, Oberheim, Rhodes controller… without any PC started… and with preset !
I’m all in !
So far it sounds excellent, and is a great romper for sequencing with the Push 3. Tomorrow I’ll be routing it through my MPC Keys in order to incorporate its FX before hitting the push. The two of them will provide a good workstation set up.
I think people who are keyboard players are especially going to enjoy this. All I can say is that I hope those who get it really enjoy it too. Based upon some of the comments here, I think we have a future Bad Gear episode, although I don’t think it’s a bad piece of gear at all.
Not sure anymore that bad gear in this YT channel are actually bad gear from this youtuber perspective. If he keeps making more and more episode, then all gear will be bad gear
Seems like it became a “marketing name for a famous YT channel”.
It never was. It"s always been “The Show about the World’s most hated Audio Tools”.
Honestly as soon as I saw the display, I knew that this thing was destined to be on that show at some point. Looking forward to it (although yes I agree this is a cool instrument even if it’s not for me).
Having the colored LED rings around the controls adds a lot of information that isn’t then required to be displayed on the screen, so you know quickly what levels are set for both engines, after you switch patches.
Wondering what the total price is for AstroLab and all the software parts together ?
I suppose Arturia could sell packages.
I’m sure the design is modular, making it easier for Arturia to switch out and reconfigure parts, in particular UI components, in design. This helps bring together two of the principal divisions in Arturia, for a shared product line, with each division benefiting from this products success, and bringing together product planning functions.
I love it so far! But Ive very specifically wanted this type of setup……
More and more ive been perplexed about the different experience i FEEL itb vs otb. I have many ideas but don’t fully understand why it makes a difference in my creative flow, but it does. And in this instance now im not sure if im itb or out??? I do believe that the computer and daw just feels like a black hole of options….
Right now i have the astrolab output to OT and also linked to the analog lab software on my laptop. The “seamless integration” between software and this “soft” hardware (lets be honest haha) is soooo good for me. That being said, there is indeed a bunch of irritating non-intuitive menu stuff. But overall, pretty good for what i assume is a first iteration….
Any issue i could have with the size of the knob display is resolved by having a 15” display (or iPhone)……and so many people will wonder why this is better than an arturia controller (that has so much more tactile sound design power) and collection V in standalone mode or the daw…
……… i dont know why except routing from my laptop and audio interface to the OT seems wrong
Whereas having audio out of an actual instrument into the OT seems right.
I blab……
How heavy does it all feel ? How do the keys feel ?
Oh look 2 smiley Shills! just another day at the office…
somehow I don’t think it will end well, just like the Arturia Origin 14 years ago.
Yeah good q: it feels less substantial than my rev2 though specs say its heavier.
Keys feel good but again i like the rev2 keybed a bit more. The black keys have a mildly rough texture and im not sure what theyre going for there….its fine though. But its not an overly inspiring feel overall.
Aftertouch also seems highly on-off but i havent played with the sensitivity yet.
So I’m a bit confused whether the Astrolab can also function as a regular controller keyboard?
I understand that the Mellotron is not included in the Astrolab keyboard itself, but can I just hook it up to a computer and play the V Collection Mellotron through the keyboard that way?
Yes. It worked automatically playing soft synths in logic no prob. Each of the 2 parts (split keyboard) can have their own midi channel as well….
For anyone in the Portland area, there’s an Astrolab at the Portland Pedal and Synth Show this weekend where you can get hands on with it;
