Are Dust Covers Necessary?

Hi all,

Slightly strange question. I’ve been moving to a more hardware / synth based setup recently, selling off old guitar pedals etc as I go. All the guitar pedals are pretty much bombproof. My current setup is a Digitakt, Digitone and an OP1, unlike the pedals the Elektron gear looks a bit more susceptible to dust. What do you use to protect your machines?

Matt

Towels and pillow cases. They work fine.

Aye, dust covers do the job ok. This would be a simple alternative…

I went to a fabric store and cut my own neon green and purple anti static polyester, and gold spandex for all my studio gear…
Seriously, I did…
Overtime lots of dust collects on things and will make its way inside…

I want to make my dust covers with plexiglas, it can melt easily on a mould, in an oven.

I recently discovered this new technology called a “feather duster.” It works brilliantly. The shit they come up with nowadays. Lol

Seriously, my partner laughed at me. She was like, duh!

Some people think the dust is the magic in the vintage synths…

Only when it’s faerie dust which is hard to come by …

Yes they are necessary especially if you live in a place where dust accumulation happen quickly and you do not regularly dust your machines. Dust can cause damage to certain materials on a synth, cause discoloration to keys, crackling in sliders, etc.

Appropriate protective cover seems interesting too if you travel / move a lot with the gear.

Pots don’t like dust for sure.
I don’t think OT’s crossfader likes it.
Now I want to protect my beloved I cleaned a months ago after 3 years without doing it !
Shame on me.

same here - when on the desk I don’t use the covers :stuck_out_tongue: just use a brush for daily dust but when I am traveling I never go without the covers

Got decksavers for OP1 and Circuit, very happy with both. I’ve got kids and not a lot of time for music production so dust does gather otherwise…

and affordable as well!

I always cover all my gear with blankets and sheets when I am finished.
Dust finds its way through everything, days, weeks, months… awful lot when I check other places in my home that are not protected… pain in the ass haha

“Remember, man, you are dust and to dust you will return.”

Please don’t cover your gear. When I’ll be dust again I’d like to go there sometimes…:slightly_smiling_face:

I have only 1 dust cover. It serves me well.
The BSP is one of very few things I don’t use, bought it for a possible eurorack voice and a vermona drm, but got neither.
Sequenced a drumrack a few times but now it’s safe under the cover; not selling this one ️ it’s black :sunglasses: and will be back.

I just put a cotton cloth over the whole sjebang and clean weekly :panda:

My wife sews and made me one that covers up all my elektron gear. She’s working on one for my mixer. Most of the other stuff I have gets put into drawers/less dusty places when not in use. I live in a 128 year-old house with 5 fireplaces so the dust can get pretty bad, but I generally recommend them anyway because it does help extend the life of faders/pots quite a bit.
