Apps Controlling the Octa

So this evening I played a little bit with using the X/Y pad on Animoog to send MIDI CC data to a track on the Octa. I just hooked up the camera connection adaptor to a simple USB to MIDI cable and it was fun and cool. I would like to have more than one x/y pad, so that I could control multiple CCs, say something like I see in TouchOSC. As I understand it, if I wish to use TouchOSC, I have to have some sort of intermediary device (computer and software) to receive messages from the TouchOSC and send them on to the OT. That is a deal breaker for me. So will Lemur control control directly from the iPad to the OT? Any other general MIDI apps that will work as well as the Animoog MIDI out features? It was virtually as easy as assigning MIDI out channels for the parameters on the OT that I wanted to control, getting the channels right and bam, done. I just want more pads on the screen, say 4.

Hi,

You can use TouchOsc without a “man-in-the-middle” device as long as you have a midi device for your ipad. TouchOsc has a complete midi implementation. but you have to change the objects in touchosc to send midi instead of osc. Lemur is of course way more complex and elaborated, but way more pricey. But the real advantage of lemur is the editor is usable without a computer, as you can edit on your ipad. i don’ t know if touchosc got an editor on the ipad (i got one in my pc) this would be a real show stopper for me

I can’t recall the app names, but there are a few cheap/free ones that’ll allow multiple xy pads, but if you’re into tinkering and customising i recommend the rabbit hole that is Lemur - highly recommended, not sure if miditouch is still being developed, but tb midi may be one and you’re best getting recommendations for any others tbh

either (older) apple 30pin cck + usb class compliant midi device
or a bespoke 30pin one like line6 midi mobilizer2 cheap or irig etc
then there’s newer apple lightning stuff
new apple ccl with lightning and and class compliant device
or a new lightning midi device, i’m sure those exist, probably iconnect stuff, at top end

Yeah, I mean I use the camera connection kit to go from the 30 pin port to the USB to a basic USB to MIDI i/o device. I can send MIDI out from Animoogs one x/y pad and many knobs to the Octa. That works swimmingly. I think the problem with Touch Osc is that I have not edited yet thus have no cc # or out put channels or anything set up. maybe?

doh, you have midi already - don’t use touch osc, but it should be easy from here

yes you will need a usb 2 midi device like this

(there is also an irig midi 2).
Than you can plug it directly into the Octa 5pin and you are good to go.
Midi in/out Touch OSC check this info Control properties · TouchOSC Mk1 | hexler.net (dead simple) just hack in your cc + ch and have fun.

but to be honest + 1 for lemur
it is way more elaborated (and pricier) but also future-proof (for IOS realms) last update on TouchOsc was end of 2013.

Great! So you could try the midi settings first and see if it suits your needs

But if you decide for the Lemur app (it´s a fair price for a great app) there is a good template for the octa in the user library

the Lemur editor is a deep beast (like the OT)
but i try to explain.

open the lemur app / create a new project
(top left corner +) select Breakpoint object
-tap and hold the object, opens object settings,
in the breakpoit settings → (Points) change it to ( 1 )
-scroll down to output (x,y,z) select X
select a destination (MIDI 0) - standard-
under MESSAGE change Note On to Control Change
select your CC number / select your channel number
go back and do the same for Y
Now you have one X/Y pad. To save time i would copy/paste the object and change the CCs afterwards.
To try your settings just push the “play-a-like” button top left corner to leave the editor layer.
This is all basic stuff, no scripting or other fancy stuff involved.
To see the power of lemur check the factory stuff and the user library

you’ll be playing slices over midi in no time
but don’t just buy it to settle on 4 xy pads
the other cheap stuff i linked will do that too

Right, I was just using that as a quick example. Lemur looks very impressive. can those more simple apps do my scenario of 4 touch pads sending to 4 different midi channels?

forget the one called TB Midi Stuff, that’s not what I expected
it took me 2 mins to knock up one with different midi channels in S1MIDITRIGGER, it’s a total no-brainer, and in no means a replacement for Lemur, it doesn’t for example register that there is a finger down, in the z direction if you will, which can be useful too, but not normal
but sometimes you may prefer the simplicity of a $3 app to knock things up very quickly where it’s harder to get lost and if it’s crap or buggy, so what, but Lemur is incredible, but easy to get stuck in, if you’re not inclined towards it in the first place
dip your toes in first, and then look at how amazing lemur is with physics and custom scripting etc, peerless, but not for the faint hearted

Got Lemur. Mind blown. I totally get it. Followed your directions, no problems, and tested it out as well as I could without any outboard gear or another iPad to run a synth app. Seemed to work. Sweeet!
