The “other people” here are Apple.

The outer screen lets users continue to wear these goggles through situations they would otherwise be socially excluded from. Given that, for most situations in which this could happen, it would be better for everyone if the goggle-user was un-goggled, the only people who really gain are Apple. The front screen enables more use cases, and thus more sales.

Cynicism aside… it’s a clever invention. It allows the AR to extend out of the headset back into the R. This wont happen directly because only the user can directly apprehend the AR. However, the headset user will appear to be present-ish in the R(eal) space, as well as within the AR space. They will ve able to communicate with, and about the AR with the R, and to some degree mediate the boundary between them.

The original iPhone was also highly subsidized (via 2 year contract) by the carrier (AT&T), today the customer pays the full retail price. No subsidy plus inflation is why they appear to be so much more expensive than back in the day.

It wasn’t just iPhones, at that time you could get hundreds off of many new phones. There were a lot more incentives signing a new contract then. Some of that still exists, but it has also shifted to the leasing type of deals where you pay your monthly lease fee and get a brand new phone every 1-2 years instead.

Hopefully they address some of the audio issues people have experienced with all audio interfaces (including just the Macbook itself!) and Apple chips.

I know they’re aware of them, RME and many others have sent out messages and posted at length but Apple doesn’t tend to publicly respond.

Also, according to this article, and this one:

The device, which didn’t actually go on sale until June, started at $499 for a 4GB model, $599 for the 8GB version (with a two-year contract).

So I guess that was the real price.

Which makes sense because AT&T had exclusive rights to iPhone in the early years.

If the performance of the Vision Pro is equivalent to a Varjo headset, hopefully we’ll start getting some additional development happening in the field of extended reality products. Here’s hoping, could be cool albeit horrifyingly dystopian!

(with a two-year contract) is the key piece. AT&T ate some of the cost of the hardware (just like all carriers and phones were back in the day) to tie the consumer in a two year contract. The original point was that todays prices aren’t really 2-3x more than originally. The carriers are just selling them at retail price.

it’ll broaden the interest for the general public and might help psvr2 and quest 2 or whatever… i think some of the tech is overkill , but it is the device that others need to match… for a high end device at least.
in addition they have a good ecosystem and the largest phone audience which makes it easier to co-exist… (though i think much of it would need the monthly icould/apple games payments )…
if you can afford 3.5k i doubt small monthly payments is much of an issue.

Lex Fridman did an interview with Mark Zuckerberg post Apple’s launch, and he seems to think its a good thing and that Apple launching into the space is a validation of the work Meta have been doing. Until the Vision SE comes out from Apple, it will likely push the average consumer over to the more affordable Quest 3. I ended up returning them, they were too hissy and I didn’t feel they were worth £99 each. Bit peeved given the amount of glowing reviews they get, if they didn’t hiss, didn’t have Bluetooth, had a volume control, line in was not distorting, were stereo just by linking, and half the price I think I would have kept them.
