Apple goes to ARM

Oh, you’re right. The 14 was 6/2 base. Thought you had a 13.

Also, let me introduce you to EveryMac Compare Macs, Compare iPods, iPhones & iPads @ EveryMac.com

Where you can compare specs of any Mac. It’s better than YouTube. Good luck!

yeah man, I’m on a mac pro14 testing it out right now, 3 more days, i got this one right here cause of the sale…

https://www.bestbuy.com/site/macbook-pro-14-laptop-apple-m1-pro-chip-16gb-memory-512gb-ssd-latest-model-space-gray/6450853.p?skuId=6450853

got 3 more days with it and will prob try the macbook air, the thing I’m worried about though is if the sale will be over if I wanna get it back lol, shoulda tried the air first

thats a really great deal regardless

I’d miss the ports for sure, even though I do already have a little port hub that I could use with the Air … it’s always annoying to use.

That’s a great system for the price IMO. I’d definitely keep it over an air. The only spec that’s a minor concern for longevity is the 512 SSD, but external drives can help.

There are a lot of little things the Pro’s have over the air, so I’ve had no interest going to the MBA. Sure, it’s awesome that it’s fanless, and lightweight, but the pro motion screen, better speakers, better mic, beefier CPU/GPU and additional ports are tough to give up.

Hi there, it’s time for me to change my old iMac and I’m thinking about the Mac mini M1, I’m using almost only external gear, ableton is for recording stems and a bit of processing them and master.
I’m about to upgrade the sound card for multitracking and I want a pc that can handle this and plug-in (overbridge for AK and DT and more).

I want also try vcv and some visuals in maxforlive.

Is the M1 mini with the upgrade ram enough?

I would have to think that it’ll be more than enough. I run a soft-synth heavy setup plus some external stuff and my M1 Mini (16gb RAM) doesn’t break a sweat. The jump in performance is not subtle and the fluidity of workflow is hugely improved for me. The computer is largely out of the way in terms of where bottlenecks occur. My skillset is now the largest bottleneck in my studio by a mile.

That’s great! My first concern is that they will come out with a mini M1 pro with more performance core than energy efficient ones

IMHO, if your needs are as modest as you’re describing and you’re not doing video/other processor heavy tasks, whether they come out with something better at some point shouldn’t hold you back. These machines can do what you’ve described very well. They first round of M1 machines are also very cheap at this point. I bought them when they came out and still felt like they were a good deal. I use 75% plugins and then some other bits of hardware here and there and I still feel like the M1 Mini is sufficient unless I really step things up. Maybe if I was mixing records again it would be an issue, but for now the machine gets the work done fluidly.

Looking at the release info for a potential Mini update, you might just wait to see a) if the expense is worth it or b) will the existing M1 Mini prices get even cheaper. October isn’t long to wait, so that might be worth it.

Thanks, yes it’s time to pick one and stick with it. I will wait a couple of month more to collect some money and think about it a bit more. I know it will perform very well with my setup and destroy the rusty performance of my current Mac :joy:

Some price cuts at Amazon on 14 and 16 inch MBPs…

For the 14-inch MacBook Pro, only the 10-core M1 Pro/1TB SSD model is on sale at $2,099.99, down from $2,499.00. This is the best price we’ve ever tracked on this model of the 14-inch MacBook Pro.

Secondly, you can get the 10-Core M1 Pro/512GB 16-inch MacBook Pro for $2,099.99, down from $2,499.00. This one is available in Space Gray and Silver, and you won’t see the deal price until you head to the checkout screen.

On the higher end, the 10-Core M1 Pro/1TB 16-inch MacBook Pro is on sale for $2,299.99, down from $2,699.00. This is another record low price on the 2021 MacBook Pro, and it’s available in Silver and Space Gray.

same deals that are still on Best Buy… so if they’re having all of these discounts in the same amounts across the board maybe that means the MacBook 14 m2’s are around the corner?

It could def mean that. If it does - it’s likely they are 5nm, so a small spec bump really. Remember when updates like that just came in a text-based update on Apples newsroom page? Just because there was a new chip didn’t mean they had to create a big fanfare about, but here we are. Super curious to see where this goes though, if it is just a 5nm bump across this gen, I’d say folks M1 Macs are largely safe in terms of needing to upgrade / resale value, so these M1 deals may be the way to go right now.

I noticed in my country the Mac Studio just hit the Refurb store for the first time also

what’dya think of this

Yeah I dig it. What they’re saying though, and all the manufacturing leaks in terms of how much far along that supply chain is, points to a March release for MBP’s at 3nm. If a few discounts at the moment points to an October release for MBP, then that’s too soon, there’s not enough chips available yet. But, they might have enough on the Pro side to get one Mac out the door in October and, at lower volume sales than most Macs, that could be the Mac Mini.

the more I use the mb 14 the more I think might forgo the testing of the Airbook and just pick one up later in addition to the 14 because I can already see that I don’t want to move the 14, and don’t want to use it for anything else but music so I’d rather carry the MacBook Air around with me from spot to spot + other task…

FWIW, for years (almost two decades!) I’ve found MacRumors’ buyer’s guides the most authoritative cure for the pains of deciding on when (and which) new Apple thingy to jump on. Comparisons, reviews, best deals of the week and very accurate predictions… (see the Mac tab for the M1/M2 stuff)

Is that a retro themed MacOS and Safari?

For those like me hanging on a decision for your new machine, the current rumour on MacRumors is that any updates will be quiet, rather than a big October event. So for @Masterblaster that could well mean a spec bump for the Mac Mini to M2, but no redesign or Pro. The same could be true of the iMac which was one of the first M1 machines. Apparently there is potential for M2 Pro, but no guarantee.

Even with M2 specs for all those machines, the current M1 Pro Macbooks still look like a great compromise, and they can be had with some decent discounts (although to be fair, I haven’t checked that often before now.) Even the M1 16GB/512Gb option looks like a good long haul bet and it’s only a year old at this point. The main reason I’m still on the fence about M2 is the simplicity of form factor is always appealing in the iMac and others.
