Apple goes to ARM

And who knows what plugin devs are building now/next years into their software to make use of the power available…

M1 is plenty enough for my music processing needs. M1max and pro are total overkill for me…
But I ‘need’ an at least 15" screen. I have tried 12" and 13" and I just can’t get used to it… (I am a size queen I guess)

I would gladly buy a 16" with M1 (and no camera or notch!)… but Apple don’t like to differentiate their product lines to that extent.

Finally some info on how the 14" M1 Max fares…

It’s very encouraging news and the 14" and 16" seem equivalent on performance.

Still looking for a stress test that shows thermals, and I’m sure someone will post that soon.
I do have a use case (recording for YouTube with OBS) where my current MBP get’s pretty hot, but I’m on the Intel MBP.

Edit: Here is another video that also says the thermals are just fine on the 14" when it has an M1 Max chip

I think you don’t need to be afraid of this easy task. M1 will do that without a problem - even without fans.

I agree. Get the one you want. Who cares if it’s overpowered.

It may come in handy in a few years when apps get more processor hungry.

Me, I will max out when the new desktops are released. Looking forward to see how they handle Maya, Premier and After Effects :+1:t6:

Is there a way to simulate the notch on a MacMini?
Asking for a friend.

A friend of mine says : a little strip of black tape…

Maybe, but I found out first hand that it’s not a lightweight use case:

  • 3 visual streams (2 camera feeds + the screen recording)
  • 2 high quality audio streams (audio virtually routed from Bitwig, plus a microphone from an audio interface)
  • Bitwig running
  • OBS running

Maybe that would run without a problem, but I currently have to turn the video streams down to 720P at 30FPS. Plus I need the audio bandwidth to be high bitrate, as I’m usually showing synth stuff.

If I can run everything at 1080P 60 FPS, that would be awesome. I could explore 4K, but it’s not necessary.

Going off topic here, but I think video game streamers quite often have a separate PC to handle the streaming with their own capture card to avoid bogging down the main machine. Not saying an M1 max isn’t a good all in one choice though :slightly_smiling_face:

I can’t wait for my M1 pro to turn up, the fans on my old MBP are bugging me even more now!

Music is my hobby. My profession is high end video editing and graphics work. That’s why I went for the M1 Max.

You do know that the last Mac Pro did cost around 100k maxed out, don‘t you?

I’m holding out for the rumored white notch

at this point i’d probably go m1 or m1 pro with slightly upped ssd.
as many have said , m1 is probably enough for audio… its unlikely i’ll ever fill up an ableton project with an actual fully arranged and finished track, so its very likely to be able to handle a few loops and vst’s that i mute on/off and get bored with.

i did turn on my pc recently (quad i5 3gig processors, 32gig ram, 1060 vid card) … its old, havent touched it for 3 years… maybe i should ‘leap’ onto that as it makes this macbook feel very slow (which it is… 2010 mbp)

I wonder how VCV would be on an M1 MAX.

on my current Late 2014 iMac…the fans kick in almost immediately and the when I’m playing back an animation in Maya.

note to notch criticism: 16:20 reviewer installed Divince Resolve…and those devs accomodated the notch. BUT in the defense of criticism, because they made adjustments for the notch, it hides app icons. it seems like folks need to get on the same page. SO…its “been addressed” but needs to be addressed. in conclusion…FIXABLE

shit I could care less about

Hell yeah, totally agree. I am fortunate that my company got me the LG 27” 5K display. Retina on a giant screen is bonkers. You can achieve the same with 4K 24” monitor.

so what about the M1 standard, how well can it push one of those ultra wide screens?

Yay! Someone finally did the testing I wanted to see:

The result is that the 14" M1 Max does NOT thermal throttle, and although the fans kick on, it’s only under extreme loads. For music production, I doubt you’ll ever hear the fans on the 14".

Looks like Apple did some solid engineering here.

For me, I need the fans to be silent when I’m recoding vocals. A bit of fan noise is fine when recording YT videos.

any good comparison clips between the M1 standard and these latest for music purposes?
