Apple goes to ARM

I’m waiting to see what the M5 MacBook Pros with the Pro version of the chip are like (and how much they are!) compared to my current M1 Pro, which has previously laughed at everything I throw at it but is definitely now slowing down a bit in terms of loading complex Ableton/Logic projects and instruments. If I do upgrade I’m going to opt for a terabyte of storage too, as my 500GB on the M1 Pro isn’t giving me enough wriggle room anymore.

exactly what I’m going through now… , trading in the macbook pro made it just enough worth it to give it a try while waiting for the Air M5’s to come out

You will love the M4 MB Air. Fast, lightweight, fanless.

I’ll skip the M5 MB Air and will wait for the M6 / M5 pro, max ? MB with 16" OLED screen etc. but maybe that isn’t necessary at all.

If you can, compare the screens. I was thinking of getting an M4 MBA to replace my old M1 MBP last year. I went to the local Apple Store and compared them side by side, and the screen difference in terms of quality was immediately and very noticeable. If you can afford, it I’d say go for the M5 MBP. Actually, if I was getting a MBA, I’d look for a very heavily discounted M4 MBA.

Edit: should have read through the thread. I’d delete my post since you’ve opted for the MBA, but maybe others reading this thread will have the same question.

yeah I did exactly what you were suggesting anyway…
I did compare the screens and the macbook pro is definitely better, just not the priority in my case as I just need a macbook groove box…so grabbed one that was heavily discounted… I will try it out for 14 days and don’t expect any hiccups but if there are I’ll be able to return it… that nano texture screen on the macbook pro is great though i’m hoping that the m5 airbook will have the nano texture, and some more ports when it comes out, if not I’ll wait for the m6 as well

Awwww, look how happy he looks with his machines!

 So refreshing! So air fine if you don’t give it heavy tasks, but it really can’t do heavy.

well mine was just delivered yesterday so I’m going to install everything on it and see what it do, I got 14 days to find out thank goodness

You’ll be fine unless you start colour grading your beats

Fortunately it doesn’t take much for a laptop to act as a tape recorder with FX, now with multitracking. I’d be surprised if there is a VST that is too heavy if you limit the scope of the project. You can always keep two projects open to arrange and FAFO separately.

Can somebody explain me how i can use my microphone on channel 5 for video conferences. I have audio midi setup, and a presonous 26 channel thunderbolt audio interface.

I could create speaker profile to have alternative monitoring setups - but how can i create a microphone profile so i can use input 5 (with phantom power mic.)

I can select audio in preferences, but there is no channel option.

maybe this works - is an app that works another badly implemented feature (that switches the input mic all the time with Airpods).

Should work for your problem too.

Hmm… now that I read the text maybe not.

Maybe also describe your problem further - you didn’t mention the app that wants it. Because every app should just let you choose that

Ah , ok i wasnt aware that this is app controlled everywhere. I tried a zoom call, to see if i can see the micro, but it didnt offerd said channel.

I have sound ID reference, and here i could select the input, recent sw seems to be a bit buggy when i want to calibrate… so i thought there is some additonal setup needed. In windows the audio mixer was ok, but i dont see any mac audio mixer so to speak.

Ok there is none. Please all write to the apple devs … they should make something, without breaking the overal good audio lateny.

well there you have the problem. Looking at you Zoom. Like if this company was the biggest troll on earth. Why are people still using it? Oh, I forgot … the only viable other option is Microsoft Teams :sob: and at this point everybody’s brain is not capable to think of other apps to do video conferencing in 2025 (had its 100 aniversary 5 years ago).

Short: We are doomed. But that’s good for the shareholder value!

Yes, it defenitly sucks. (Teams and Zoom only.) – ok there is Discord - which is very useful, and teamspeak , Ventrilo - but they seem to be out of fashion.

Discord is more used in the private sector, mostly not for commercial applications. Maybe its to gamey for them. (Beware your workers could have fun somewhere.)
