Yeah, and also trying to guess sounds out of text never works out. I just firmly believe that Syntakt can do almost anything. A link to some kind of music example would help a lot @Damweb

So it’s not the sounds I want, it’s the flexibility of the MM. The variety of sound engines and routing and FX and sequencer. The Syntakt is pretty close but as I said, the sound doesn’t grab me.

Machinedrum and Nord Modular come to mind. But there’s also the Roland boxes such as the SH4D that have a lot of engines.

Yes a MD UW with the X.10 custom firmware comes to mind in terms of what OP is looking for, but it almost may be too similar to the “sound” of the mnm, but not really if you play to its different strengths. The polyphonic machines & NFX machines added in the custom firmware really bring the MD up to par with the mnm in terms of unique sounding processing but also extreme flexibility

yeah I say if you really love the MnM, only it will do. sell some stuff and/or start saving. yes, it’s pricey. but there’s no shame in paying that price, if it’s really the machine for you.

Octatrack has the chorus, compressor and plate reverb I believe, right? Or a couple of those at least. I’d personally combine octatrack with ST, DN, A4. Or get an M8 or OP1 or something. I hear you though. I’d like Syntakt updates to give it more mnm like flexibility

you can do single cycle waveform stuff with the OT can’t you? (i’ve never owned one) …if so that plus obv plenty of samples would get a bit of the way towards a chunk of the desired aspects of the MM. you’d think Elektron would be working towards incorporating some of those MM/MD elements that are obviously missed into future devices…

To come back to the subject, I believe a few years with an instrument let you discover new ways of producing sounds.
I have recently tried to recreate some S-1 patches on the A4, and I discovered new areas and managed to create some sounds I had been looking for for a long time.

What makes MM special is both the sequencing (thinking of the traversing plocks), the numerous engines and the weird filter resonance and other ways to blow the sounds.

In other sonic territories, I’d say that synths as capable as an old A4 or the little M8 could fit OP’s description. But it’s less the synth than the time spent on using it.

On MM, you can plock a parameter with different values e.g. on steps 1 and 15 and every step in between will play the interpolated v askip for this parameter.
