Anyone Using a Hardware Sampler?

Yep the ASR10, EPS series, SP12/1200 and obviously the old MPCs are all great. I think the Akai rack samplers are pretty good too, but honestly unless you’re getting one of the 12bit samplers they made, I’d stay away from the “newer” Akai rack samplers (the 16 bit ones). The S900 and S950 are the holy grail in terms of that amazing warm nostalgic 12bit crunchy smooth goodness. The S2000 can do either 8bit or 16bit, the 8bit is maybe a bit too lofi. The S3000 is not bad, it’s basically the same sampler as the MPC3000. Me personally, I’d stay away from all the other ones (S1000, S1100, S5000 etc.), I think the hassle of editing, and the very very limited sample time on those machines is not worth the sound that they impart. Same with the 2000XL, when that machine first came out, people hated on it for being too clean sounding compared to the older MPCs. I have one, and I would agree, to be fair it does have a bit of character if you run the inputs a bit hotter than you normally would and let it peak a bit. But no where close to the charm and character of the older samplers.

This is all coming from the perspective of, you are buying an old sampler to get a warmer, “more vintage” sound. If you want a powerful sampler, then don’t waste your time on these rack units. The ASR10/EPS series might be more up your alley- they have a nice warm sound but are also capable samplers and sample editors.

I think my favorite sampler (that I own) in terms of character and sound, is the Zoom Sampletrak St-224. It’s an extremely slept on device, often called “the poor man’s SP1200”, it sounds absolutely amazing at both the medium and lofi sampling grades.
