Anyone using a Bitstream 3x?

When I get bak home, Ill actually open the software for the bitstream 3x and show you what I mean. I forgot up until now I was supposed to provide information some time ago but I forgot. Ill get to that today in the next few hours.

Cool thing about the bitstream with the analog four is you can set knobs on the 3x to control multiple perf mode knobs, or expand the number of perf modes. its kind of a “your imagination / fiddling / experimentation is the limit” thing.

HEre is just a simple example.

1 - chose a midi cc. You can slo do use defined if youre more savy with sysex. Im still teaching myself this stuff, so I dont have a lot of advice/tips, but it can potentilly open it a bit more.

2- here is where you chain controls together. As you can see, you can literally map man controls in succession. You can kind of plan it out as well so you can approach this is a systematic fashion. Ive been dedicating the bottom row of knobs for chained control master groups (if that makes sense) and kind of simplifying what knobs do what as I go up. As far as the anlog four goes, as Long as you know what controls the perf knobs are (channel / cc) then you can do all sorts of cool shit.

Now, granted, I havent dug as deep as I would like, but as long as you use the editor, this device is really easy to use. If you understand sysex enough to write midi strings, then I think it can be quite a useful tool. Either for 200 bucks its a pretty rad box.

the is probably one of the last remaining controllers i havent bought yet , it looks to have a lot of control over things (much more than most that only offer midi cc / note / basic range of values).

it looks good… perhaps one day i’ll try one.

I can totally recommend the Bitstream. Its feels like its really made for controlling the OT. Got my filters and delay of each channel mapped to the knobs above the faders of each channel on the BS. Pretty neat. Put the master delay time on the ribbon ctrl for some master delay madness. I actually don’t need to touch the OT at all when messing with it live. It took some time to set up. I got it back when I was using the MnM/MD/OT trilogy and I had it mapped to all 3 machines and could switch which one I wanted to ctrl on the BS. One thing that I really struggled with was to map the joystick to the joystick of the MnM - Until today I haven’t figured out what the deal is… Even though the keyless MnM doesnt have the joystick it does have the parameter for it… Has anybody found a use for the joystick on any of your other machines? What did you map it to?

According to the manual, and my aging memory, incoming Pitch Bend messages control the joystick left and right destinations, Mod Wheel (CC 1) messages control joystick up destinations, and Breath Control (CC 2) messages control joystick down destinations.

All active support stopped several years ago, but the device will still work well. It doesn’t need any driver software to work. Just connect it to your computer via USB (or MIDI).

A lot of configuration of the messages sent by the Bitstream can be made on the unit itself. Advanced customization can be made on the Configuration software. This software still runs on mac OS 10.14 Mojave, but the Configuration software and the Firmware Upgrader software are 32-bit applications and so will not run natively on mac OS 10.15.

You should search the forum and read about other controllers. This topic is about the Bitstream. The answer to your question will depend on exactly what you want to achieve with a controller: if necessary, make a new topic to say specifically what your needs are.

One that interesting me, second hand (ofcourse), have joystick problem, overall looks pretty decent, 3.4/5 i guess, but I can’t tested all the functions (posted online), do they (Bitstreams) easy breakes or screen shutdown? I mean, test of time.

Maybe you can ask the seller to post a photo of the screen, or promise to refund you if any of the controls are broken?

Mine has worked fine for many years. They are very tough. But there are very few examples to know what the general reliability is.

my b3x is over ten years and is ok . you must clean it. he is perfekt for all elektron machines - i have my complete monomachine and octatrack in bitstream3x

bs3x has worked for me since I bought it new. A couple of things:

I’m using MacOS catalina and the configuration software “mostly” works. It can’t find the template library even though it’s in the same directory. The configuration software works great on Windows 10, but on Windows I can’t get the firmware updater to work (works on MacOS though).
Even though it is supposedly class-compliant, I have found the steadiest usage when plugged in and using midi cables (i.e. not just usb-only). Specifically, my iconnectivity mioxl seems to have some issues both powering it sufficiently and causes failures when uploading all configuration settings.
I still have the original CD that shipped with it, but there’s nothing on it that you can’t get off the website.
The bs3x repository someone linked earlier has the 1.9 firmware in the binaries folder. You can just download it without having to build it from source or anything. I installed it to get the configuration software to quit nagging me about an update being available.

I just bought a Bitstream from a guy who found ‘a problem with the dinsync output’. He says v1.9 solves just that problem. EDIT: when you touch the faders (pre v1.9) the DIN sync goes wrong.

Very interesting bug!. I don’t think i’ve used din sync on mine. Still love the bitstream - very solid device. I wish you could adjust midi channels per control without a computer. If it wasn’t for that I don’t think I’d ever need to use the software editor.

I’ve always been interested in one but went with the BCR2000 for cost. Obviously one has faders, a transport, and more buttons, but otherwise can anyone speak to how they compare?

Just found the changelog for 1.9 in the git history:
