I was thinking maybe a ROLI seaboard could let me explore this arena
In doing a bit of research it looks like ROLI’s Equator is very limited when it comes to sample manipulation and can only load soundfonts and is pretty rigid in its sample manipulation (crossfades and morphs not a thing) which is really disappointing.
If anyone knows about software that works with ROLI or use a ROLI for experimental sample manipulation i would love to hear from you!
I was thinking at looking into Supercollider and Kontakt but not sure how well they work with MPE messages.
Thanks for reading and love to hear any info on this subject!
I was just going to suggest Max MSP. I own both Kyma and a Continuum, and though Amon Tobin’s sound work is without a doubt quite impressive, much of what he’s doing in that video could likely be approximated without either Kyma or the Continuum. Back before I bought a Continuum, I was happy to manipulate Kyma sounds using a Wacom tablet, and later an iPad.
Having said that, the Continuum is a remarkable instrument - it is one of the very few instruments that totally changed the way I make music (for the better). As did Kyma. I recommend either or both if you can swing them. Do keep in mind that a cheaper Continuum alternative from Haken was also shown at Super Booth this week. It will be sold at a discount via Kickstarter.
Yeah, it’s an expensive system to get into, and both the Continuum and Kyma are quite demanding to use well. The Continuumini shouldn’t be as hard to master, though, as it has far less control. For these kinds of sample manipulations, I can think of a few options:
Continuumini or Seaboard+Max
iPad+Max
Wacom or iPad+secondhand Capybara
